PRACTICING COLLEGE LEARNING STRATEGIES, Seventh Edition, is a readable, straightforward, and practical text that focuses on creating a smooth transition to college for first year students. The text and activities are thoughtfully constructed using strategies supported by brain research and neuroscience. In addition, the structured activities and practices guide students in the reflection process to make the information personal and useful. By combining practical application with learning strategies theory, PRACTICING COLLEGE LEARNING STRATEGIES is a motivational tool teaching students how to learn. The author focuses on putting students in the driver's seat, teaching them how to use all of the tools at their disposal so they'll succeed in college and beyond.

    • Because students want proof that the strategies in the book really work, the author has included tips from students who have found success and unique ways to implement the strategies in the college setting.
    • Each chapter ends with a critical-thinking exercise that applies the driving analogy to chapter concepts. Brain research confirms that using metaphors or analogies is one of the best ways for students to demonstrate that they understand a new concept. New learning is only processed into long-term memory by making new connections to connections that are already in the brain. Therefore, the Parallel Parking feature encourages students to think critically about how the strategies used in each chapter and their experience as a college student parallel various driving terms.
    • The Making Connections critical-thinking feature helps students analyze and synthesize what they've learned, and apply new concepts or skills to other courses or situations.
    • The What's Your Advice? case study asks students to synthesize and evaluate what they learn in the form of advice to others.
    • Virtual Field Trips, used as integrated technology boxes, explore college social skills such as managing finances, campus safety, and health and well-being issues, as well as structured Internet assignments to supplement and personalize strategies use in each chapter.
    • Modeling the Learning Process reviews how students used the steps of the learning process to reinforce learning how to learn and make it transferrable to lifelong learning.
    • Brain Bytes throughout the text reinforce the book's approach on brain-based learning and show students how they can teach their brain to learn more effectively.
    • Career Connections is a new feature that shows students how the skills they are learning now will apply beyond the college classroom.
    • The Roadmap to Success is a chapter opener map that provides an easy-to-follow guide of the chapter's main topics. Clearly listed learning outcomes introduce exactly what the student will learn.
    • A new introduction, Where Are We Going?, facilitates critical thinking by framing every chapter in terms of the other content in the book, so students understand where and why each strategy fits with the other strategies they are learning.
    • A redesigned interior reflects the book's driving motif to remind students that learning is a journey and they must be in the driver's seat, looking for road signs, planning ahead for where they're going, and reflecting on where they've been.
    • Chapter 10, Managing Stress, has been revised to include a new section on assertiveness training to teach students when and how to say no, in college and in life.
    • Chapter 11, Information Literacy, includes a new section on how to research job possibilities.
    • Exercises have been renamed “Practice” to highlight the need to practice strategies.
    • To help students capture key strategies in the book that will help them across their college classes, “For Your Student Survival Kit” highlights tips that students can capture to create their own personal survival kit.
    • End-of-the-chapter Study Guides allow students to create their own study guides to prepare for tests.
  • “I like the way this text is written, and all of the applications that are available to the students throughout the text.”

Carolyn's Study Skills website ( has been visited by more than a million people! When asked to describe her teaching style, Carolyn says: “I am first of all enthusiastic about learning how to learn. I get excited about learning and hopefully my students catch the spirit. My classes are a combination of lecture supported by many visuals and hands-on activities. Skills for being successful in college are learned by doing. So, once students understand a concept, my aim for them is to develop the skills by practice and make modification to the skills that will work for them. A student in my class can expect homework due every class period. My style may seem casual and somewhat laid back, but each class is carefully planned with goals and objectives in mind. I am extremely demanding but would like to think that I am patient. I try to make sure that everything we do in class is backed up on the website.”
