The tenth edition of Steve and Susan Zumdahl’s widely regarded CHEMISTRY combines a robust conceptual framework, a readable and engaging writing style, and an unparalleled selection of problems and exercises that make it one of the most trusted chemistry textbooks available today. CHEMISTRY uses a thoughtful approach built on creative problem-solving techniques and critical thinking. An emphasis on modeling and interactive examples helps students learn how to approach and solve chemical problems -- to think like chemists -- so that they can apply the process of problem solving to all aspects of their lives. Zumdahl and Zumdahl -- and new coauthor Don DeCoste -- give students the tools they need to become critical thinkers: solve problems, apply chemical theories, and evaluate outcomes.

    • CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING: Conceptual learning and problem solving are fundamental to the approach of Chemistry. The text gives students the tools to become critical thinkers: to ask questions, to apply rules and models, and to evaluate the outcome.
    • PROBLEM-SOLVING: This text talks to the student about how to approach and solve chemical problems, since one of the main goals of general chemistry is to help students become creative problem solvers. The authors emphasize a thoughtful, logical approach rather than simply memorizing procedures.
    • DYNAMIC ART PROGRAM: Most of the glassware, orbitals, graphs, flowcharts, and molecules have been redrawn to better serve visual learners and enhance the textbook.
    • REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS: Interesting applications of modern chemistry show students the relevance of chemistry to their world.
    • COMPREHENSIVE END-OF-CHAPTER PRACTICE AND REVIEW: This text offers end-of-chapter exercises for every type of student and for every kind of homework assignment, including an unparalleled variety of end-of-chapter content with problems that increase in rigor and integrate multiple concepts.
    • In order to provide the most up to date and relevant content, NEW material has been included throughout the book, including new sections or subsections on Simple Oxidation-Reduction Titrations (Chapter 4); The Process of Heat (Chapter 6); Forces Between Polar and Nonpolar Molecules, Distinguishing Between Chemical and Physical Changes at the Molecular Level, and The Difference Between Real and Ideal Gases (Chapter 10); Polyprotic Acid Titrations (Chapter 15); Entropy Changes in Aqueous Ionic Solutions and Non-Spontaneous Reactions (Chapter 17).
    • OWLv2 INTEGRATION: New pre-lecture activities in OWLv2 ensure students come prepared to class, and additional end-of-chapter questions offer a wider selection of content to assign for review and practice.
    • Constantly striving to make chemistry concepts as clear as possible for students some sections have been revised or reorganized.
    • NEW explanation of use of tabular method to determine limiting reactant in Chapter 3.
    • Reorganization of the material on Balancing Oxidation-Reduction Equations between Chapters 4 and 18.
    • Reorganization of Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES) for Atoms between Chapters 7 and 9.
    • NEW discussion of LDFs for molecules with many electrons (Chapter 10).
    • NEW subsection Chromatography with new art on TLC (Chapter 11).
    • NEW END-OF–CHAPTER QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS have been added throughout the text, ensuring the most up to date applications
    • THE REVISED AND UPDATED ART PROGRAM has been modified as needed for clarity, and new macro/micro illustrations have been added.

These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his BS in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his PhD from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.

Donald J. DeCoste is Associate Director of General Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign, and has been teaching chemistry at the high school and college levels for over 25 years. He earned his BS in Chemistry and PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign. At UIUC he teaches courses in introductory chemistry and the teaching of chemistry and has developed chemistry courses for non-science majors, preservice secondary teachers, and preservice elementary teachers. He has received the LAS Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Provost’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award four times. Don has led workshops for secondary teachers and graduate student teaching assistants, discussing the methods and benefits of getting students more actively involved in class.
