This collection provides documentation on Germany’s relations with China during the interwar
period. TheChinese urgency tomodernize themilitary and its national defense industry, coupled
withGermany’sneed forastablesupplyof rawmaterials,put the twocountrieson the roadofclose
relations from the late 1920s to the late 1930s. Although intense cooperation lastedonly from the
Nazi takeoverofGermany in1933tothestartofthewarwith Japan in1937,andconcretemeasuresat
industrial reformstarted inearnestonly in 1936, ithadaprofoundeffectonChinesemodernization
and the capabilityof theChinese to resist the Japanese in thewar.
This collection documents the broad range of nineteenth century religious missionary activities,
practicesandthought intheUnitedStatesbyreproducingpivotalpersonalnarratives,organizational
records andbiographies of theessential leaders, simplemissionaries and churches. This collection
includesmaterials onmissionary activities amongNativeAmericans andAfricanAmericans, both
slaves and freedmen. Inaddition, it highlights activities in far-flung regions and countries, suchas
Africa, Fiji and theSandwich Islands, India, China, SoutheastAsia, JapanandHawaii.
