DuringWorldWar I, Indian nationalists took advantage of Great Britain’s preoccupationwith the
European war by attempting to foment revolution in India to overthrow British rule. The Justice
Department and U.S. Attorney records primarily concern the U.S. government’s prosecution of
thesenationalists in the “HinduConspiracyCase” for violationsof theEspionageAct (40Stat. 217-
231) arising from twomajor incidents. The ImmigrationandNaturalizationService records relate to
efforts to revoke the citizenshipof certain IndiansnaturalizedasU.S. citizens, aswell as togeneral
efforts toexclude Indians fromadmission to theUnitedStates andCanada.
Comprising records of the State Department’s Central Classified Files, this collection contains
records relating to the internal affairs of India during the period 1945-1949. The records include
