Overview

Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, the tenth edition of Corey's best-selling text helps you compare and contrast the therapeutic models expressed in counseling theories. Corey introduces you to the major theories (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist, postmodern, and integrative approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to two cases ("Stan" and "Gwen"). He shows you how to apply theories in practice, and helps you learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style. New learning objectives identify key aspects of each theory and focus your study.

  • Chapter 12, "Feminist Therapy," includes an updated and expanded treatment of principles of feminist therapy, new discussion of relational-cultural theory, new focus on multicultural and social justice perspectives, updated discussion of the role of assessment and diagnosis in feminist therapy, more on strengths from a diversity perspective, and a revised and expanded discussion on therapeutic techniques and strategies.
  • Chapter 14, "Family Systems Therapy," offers material on recent developments in family therapy, updated material on the postmodern perspective on family therapy, and increased attention to feminism, multiculturalism, and postmodern constructionism as applied to family therapy.
  • Chapter 10, "Cognitive Behavior Therapy," is reorganized and features updating and expansion of all forms of CBT, including Beck's cognitive therapy, a new section on strengths-based CBT, new material on Meichenbaum's stress inoculation training, a revised section on Meichenbaum's constructivist approach to CBT, and increased discussion of CBT from a multicultural perspective. There are also many new examples to illustrate the application of CBT techniques.
  • Chapter 15, "An Integrative Perspective," is a major revision with many new topics, including updated research on the role of the relationship in therapy outcomes, added material on using feedback from clients on a regular basis for improving service delivery, and updated findings from the literature on effectiveness of psychotherapy.
  • A few new features of the tenth edition include: Learning Objectives for all the theory chapters; Self-Reflection and Discussion Questions at the end of each theory chapter to facilitate thinking and interaction in class. In addition to the case of Stan, there is a new case of Gwen, who is a composite of many clients. A guest contributor, Dr. Kellie Kirksey, is the therapist who describes her way of working with the case of Gwen from each of the theoretical perspectives.
  • Chapter 9, "Behavior Therapy," features an updated and expanded discussion of the new "third-wave" behavior therapies, a revised section on dialectical behavior therapy, revision of EMDR, and new material on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and mindfulness and acceptance strategies.
  • Chapter 13, "Postmodern Approaches," presents additional material on parallels between solution-focused brief therapy and positive psychology, a broadened discussion of the key concepts of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), more emphasis on the client-as-expert in the therapy relationship in postmodern approaches, a revision of material on techniques in the postmodern approaches, and more emphasis on the collaborative nature of narrative therapy and SFBT.
  • The book's flexible organization allows professors to cover topics in any order they choose to best meet particular student or course design needs.
  • Case studies focusing on two clients, "Stan" and "Gwen" (a new case of an African-American female client) appear in each chapter to demonstrate the application of all presented theories and make it easy for students to compare and contrast approaches. Each case focuses on applying techniques from every theory to both Stan and Gwen, bringing the theories to life by showing how it can be used in exploring specific problems raised by the clients.
  • Corey's discussion of current ethical and professional issues facing counseling and human service professionals prepares students for the realities of practice. The chapter on ethics features the revised ACA 2014 Code of Ethics.
  • A concluding chapter shows students how to integrate the various theories and how to design their own integrative approach to counseling practice. The cases of Stan and Gwen are illustrated with the therapists working from an integrative perspective. Summary charts allow for comparisons among the theories. New and expanded topics include the central role of the client in determining therapy outcomes, the case for practice-based evidence rather than evidence-based practice, and the trend toward accountability in counseling.
  • All theory chapters are honed and updated, some with new clinical examples to illustrate techniques. New, revised, or expanded topics include relational psychoanalysis, the role of countertransference, (Ch. 4); Adlerian Therapy, assessment and diagnosis, new examples that bring Adlerian concepts to life reorientation and encouragement process (ch.5); international developments of existential therapy, the main aims of existential therapy (Ch. 6); clients as active self-healers, motivational interviewing, emotion-focused therapy (Ch. 7); therapist presence and the therapeutic relationship in Gestalt therapy, and the contemporary relational approach to Gestalt practice (Ch. 8). Two additional chapters on the Case of Stan approach and transactional analysis are included in the MindTap Counseling eReader.
  • A framework for creatively synthesizing the therapeutic models, along with step-by-step guidelines, enhances the book's focus on helping students draw from the various theoretical models to develop a personalized counseling style.
  • New to this edition is a set of Learning Objectives at the beginning of each theory chapter. In addition, five new Self-Reflection and Discussion Questions appear at the end of each theory chapter to engage students in thinking about and applying the material.
