Help students overcome their apprehension about statistics Brase and Brase's UNDERSTANDING BASIC STATISTICS, Sixth Edition. A condensed and more streamlined version of the same authors' bestselling UNDERSTANDABLE STATISTICS, Tenth Edition, this book offers instructors an effective way to teach the essentials of statistics, including early coverage of regression, within a more limited time frame. Thorough yet abbreviated, the text helps students realize the real-world significance of statistics, and offers an accessible exposition and a new, complete technology package. The Sixth Edition addresses the growing importance of developing students' critical thinking and statistical literacy skills with the introduction of new features and exercises throughout the text. The use of the graphing calculator, Microsoft Excel, MINITAB, and SPSS is covered but not required.

  • NEW Complement your text and course content with study and practice materials. Cengage Learning's Statistics CourseMate brings course concepts to life with interactive learning, study, and exam preparation tools that support the printed textbook. Watch student comprehension soar as your class works with the printed textbook and the textbook-specific website. Statistics CourseMate goes beyond the book to deliver what you need!
  • NEW The Looking Forward feature shows students where the presented material will be used later and motivates them to pay extra attention to key topics.
  • REVISED Tech Notes throughout the text give students helpful hints on using TI-84 Plus and TI-Nspire (with 84 Plus keypad) and TI-83 calculators, Microsoft Excel 2010, and MINITAB to solve a problem. They include display screens to help students visualize and better understand the solution.
  • REVISED Using Technology instructions are available at the end of each chapter in the Using Technology section. Problems are presented with real-world data from a variety of disciplines that can be solved by using TI-84 Plus, TI-Nspire (with 84 Plus keypad) and TI-83 Plus calculators, Microsoft Excel 2010, MINITAB, and SPSS.
  • Examples in Probability (Chapter 5) have been revised to incorporate sample spaces that are small and easy for students to visualize.
  • NEW Expand Your Knowledge problems present the geometric mean and the harmonic mean (Section 3.1), moving averages (Section 3.2), correlation of averages (Section 4.2), odds for and odds against (Section 5.1), uniform probability distribution (Section 7.1), plus four method for confidence intervals (Section 8.3), probability of two confidence intervals (Chapter 8 review), and serial correlation (Section 11.4).
  • Section 2.1 now includes a discussion of cumulative frequency and ogives.
  • NEW More than 200 new and revised problems that feature basic computations, interpretation, and reinforce statistical literacy. Basic computation problems focus student attention on relevant formulas, requirements, and computational procedures. After practicing these skills, students are more confident as they approach real-world applications.
  • NEW Interpretation problems ask students to explain the meaning of statistical results in the context of a particular application.
  • Available with access to Aplia online homework system. Aplia helps students improve comprehension—and their grade—by integrating a variety of mediums and tools such as video, tutorials, practice tests, and an interactive eBook. Created by a professor to enhance his own courses, Aplia provides automatically graded assignments with detailed, immediate feedback on every question, and innovative teaching materials. More than 1,000,000 students at over 1,800 institutions have used Aplia.
  • Guided Exercises immediately follow selected examples and provide an opportunity for students to explore new concepts. Step-by-step solutions accompanying each exercise allow for immediate self-evaluation and reinforcement.
  • Special margin notes draw attention to more information about a related topic appearing in the Expand Your Knowledge exercises at the end of the section, allowing you to cover additional material as desired and enabling students to learn more about topics they find especially interesting or difficult to grasp.
  • Procedures provide a brief summary of the statistical methods introduced in each chapter section and are followed by specific examples and guided exercises to help students master and apply each procedure.
  • Interpretation Boxes in several chapters help students refine their critical thinking and analysis skills further by working to correctly interpret their results in the context of a particular application.
  • Expand Your Knowledge problems present the geometric mean and the harmonic mean moving averages, correlation of averages odds for and odds against, uniform probability distribution, plus four methods for confidence intervals, probability of two confidence intervals, and serial correlation.
  • Bulleted Chapter Summaries make it easy for students to identify key concepts covered in a chapter and to review the material quickly and effectively when working on class assignments or preparing for a test.
  • Cumulative Review Problems appear after every third chapter and integrate concepts introduced in the previous set of chapters, allowing students to regularly reconsider the course material already covered and reinforce key concepts.
  • Critical Thinking Boxes at the end of most sections help students hone their critical thinking skills by providing additional clarification on specific statistical concepts as a safeguard against incorrect evaluation of information.
  • Focus Points at the beginning of each section introduce the topics to be covered, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the main ideas in advance and focus their reading and studying more effectively.
  • Coverage of regression early in the text makes it easier to provide students with a thorough introduction to essential statistical concepts and helps them to steadily build knowledge and improve their skills throughout the course.
