Overview

In the new edition of BIOLOGY: A HUMAN EMPHASIS, authors Cecie Starr, Christine A. Evers, and Lisa Starr have partnered with the National Geographic Society to develop a text designed to engage and inspire. This trendsetting text introduces the key concepts of biology using clear explanations and unparalleled visuals. While mastering core concepts, each chapter challenges learners to question what they read and apply the concepts learned, providing critical-thinking skills and science knowledge needed in life. Renowned for its writing style the new edition is enhanced with exclusive content from the National Geographic Society, including over 200 new photos and illustrations. New "People Matter" sections in most chapters profile National Geographic Explorers and Grantees who are making significant contributions in their field, showing how concepts in the chapter are being applied in biological research. Each chapter concludes with an "Application" section highlighting real-world uses of biology that helps make connections to chapter content. Providing selected chapters from BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, this text is ideal for emphasizing human applications.

For decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Christine Evers has been providing tools for biology education for more than 20 years. Before becoming a textbook author, she provided content for Genentech’s Access Excellence website and developed digital course materials for a variety of publishers. She received her undergraduate education at SUNY Stony Brook and did graduate work at Yale University.

Lisa Starr has been creating incredible art for the Starr biology textbooks since 1997 and began authoring the books in 2004. She has a passion for all things science, and particularly enjoys parsing complex scientific concepts into written and visual content that engages nonscientists. She has an education in chemistry and biochemistry and an extensive background in molecular biology-based research in both academic and industrial settings.

  • The new edition of BIOLOGY: A HUMAN EMPHASIS was developed in partnership with the National Geographic Society, an organization known for eye-opening photography and a legacy of inspiring people to care about biology and the environment that supports it. The result is a text that combines clear explanations with unparalleled visuals to bring core concepts into focus.
  • New "People Matter" sections in most chapters profile National Geographic Explorers and Grantees who are making significant contributions in their field, showing students how concepts in the chapter are being applied in their biological research.
  • Each chapter concludes with an "Application" section highlighting real-world uses of biology and helping students make connections and deepen understanding of concepts.
  • The visually-appealing and accurate art program helps visual learners with step-by-step art, Figure It Out" images, and animated figures.
  • Data Analysis Activities provide students with the opportunity to work with real data, further strengthening analytical skills and providing insight into contemporary research.
  • Take-Home Message at the end of each section poses a question that reflects the critical content of the section and answers the question in bulleted list format so students grasp the key concepts.
  • The entire text has been enhanced visually throughout. Key Concepts with thumbnail images are reiterated in the visual summaries, and stepped out figures and "Figure It Out" figures help students along the way.
  • The text balances concepts and applications. All points necessary for developing an understanding of a basic concept are on a single page or two facing pages so students can focus on one topic at a time and digest information in manageable segments.
  • On-page running glossary provides immediate help with the language of Biology and aids reading comprehension.
  • Digital options include Aplia for Biology, a homework solution that reinforces course concepts, and MindTap for Biology, which combines readings, multimedia, activities, and assessments into a singular learning path. The MindTap media includes pop-up tutors that help explain key topics with short video explanations.
