Overview

EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE IN LANGUAGE ARTS: EARLY LITERACY, Eleventh Edition responds to national legislation, professional standards, and public concern about the development of young children's language and foundational literacy skills by providing current research-based instructional strategies in early language development. Activities throughout emphasize the relationship between listening, speaking, reading, writing (print), and viewing in language arts areas. This book addresses the cultural and ethnic diversity of children and provides techniques and tips for adapting curricula. Theory is followed by how-to suggestions and plentiful examples of classic books and stories, poems, finger plays, flannel board and alphabet experiences, puppetry, language games, drama, and phonemic and phonetic awareness activities. Readers will also learn how, as teachers, they can best interact with children to promote appropriate language development, and how they can create a print-rich environment in the early childhood classroom.

  • NEW! TeachSource Digital Downloads are downloadable, sometimes customizable, practical and professional resources that allow students to immediately implement and apply the textbook's content in the field. Students can download these tools and keep them forever, enabling preservice teachers to begin building a library of practical, professional resources. A TeachSource Digital Download label identifies these items.
  • NEW! MindTap for Education is a first-of-its-kind digital solution that prepares teachers by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and competencies they must demonstrate to earn an education degree and state licensure, and to being a successful career. Through activities based on real-life teaching situations, MindTap elevates students’ thinking by giving them experiences in applying concepts, practicing skills, and evaluating decisions, guiding them to become reflective educators.
  • NEW! Improved integration of professional standards helps students make connections between what they are learning in the textbook and the standards. A list of standards to be covered appears at the beginning of each chapter, including NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2007); DAP: Focus on Infants and Toddlers (2013); and Common Core Standards for English language arts and literacy. Icons identify standards-related content throughout the text; a complete list of the standards appears in the standards correlation chart on the book's inside covers.
  • NEW! Chapter Learning Objectives now correlate with main headings throughout the chapter and with the end-of-chapter summary. The objectives highlight what students need to know to process and understand the information in the chapter. After completing the chapter, students should be able to demonstrate how they can use and apply their new knowledge and skills.
  • Inclusive coverage emphasizes the importance of respecting and understanding each child's uniqueness and of creating language-rich environments to address the needs of, for instance, children from various cultural backgrounds, English-Language Learners, and children with special needs.
  • Practical and classic examples of activities, which can be used immediately, make the text a useful addition to the student's resource library. These include research-based activities that promote children's reading success in preschool classes.
  • Separate chapters on infants and toddlers enhance understanding of their communication abilities and of the important role of adult behavior in promoting language growth.
  • The eleventh edition uses current research as well as classic findings and recommendations.
  • TeachSource Video footage from the classroom, introduced in the text and viewable online, helps students relate key chapter content to real-life scenarios. Critical-thinking questions following each video provide opportunities for in-class or online discussion and reflection.
