For more than 30 years, Dr. Hopper has been involved with Student Success at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. She is a nationally known lecturer and workshop leader on topics such as learning how to learn, learning styles, memory, time management, effective classroom techniques, and using technology in the classroom. She is a frequent guest at the National and Fall Energizer conferences for College Survival and is active in the NADE and CRLA organizations. Carolyn's Study Skills website (http://capone.mtsu.edu/studskl/) has been visited by more than a million people! When asked to describe her teaching style, Carolyn says: “I am first of all enthusiastic about learning how to learn. I get excited about learning and hopefully my students catch the spirit. My classes are a combination of lecture supported by many visuals and hands-on activities. Skills for being successful in college are learned by doing. So, once students understand a concept, my aim for them is to develop the skills by practice and make modification to the skills that will work for them. A student in my class can expect homework due every class period. My style may seem casual and somewhat laid back, but each class is carefully planned with goals and objectives in mind. I am extremely demanding but would like to think that I am patient. I try to make sure that everything we do in class is backed up on the website.”

  • The Roadmap to Success is a chapter opener map that provides an easy-to-follow guide of the chapter's main topics. Clearly listed learning outcomes introduce exactly what the student will learn.
  • Chapter 10, Managing Stress, has been revised to include a new section on assertiveness training to teach students when and how to say no, in college and in life.
  • A redesigned interior reflects the book's driving motif to remind students that learning is a journey and they must be in the driver's seat, looking for road signs, planning ahead for where they're going, and reflecting on where they've been.
  • A new introduction, Where Are We Going?, facilitates critical thinking by framing every chapter in terms of the other content in the book, so students understand where and why each strategy fits with the other strategies they are learning.
  • Career Connections is a new feature that shows students how the skills they are learning now will apply beyond the college classroom.
  • Modeling the Learning Process reviews how students used the steps of the learning process to reinforce learning how to learn and make it transferrable to lifelong learning.
  • The Making Connections critical-thinking feature helps students analyze and synthesize what they've learned, and apply new concepts or skills to other courses or situations.
  • Each chapter ends with a critical-thinking exercise that applies the driving analogy to chapter concepts. Brain research confirms that using metaphors or analogies is one of the best ways for students to demonstrate that they understand a new concept. New learning is only processed into long-term memory by making new connections to connections that are already in the brain. Therefore, the Parallel Parking feature encourages students to think critically about how the strategies used in each chapter and their experience as a college student parallel various driving terms.
  • Because students want proof that the strategies in the book really work, the author has included tips from students who have found success and unique ways to implement the strategies in the college setting.
  • The What's Your Advice? case study asks students to synthesize and evaluate what they learn in the form of advice to others.
  • Brain Bytes throughout the text reinforce the book's approach on brain-based learning and show students how they can teach their brain to learn more effectively.
  • Virtual Field Trips, used as integrated technology boxes, explore college social skills such as managing finances, campus safety, and health and well-being issues, as well as structured Internet assignments to supplement and personalize strategies use in each chapter.
