  • REORGANIZED AND EXPANDED CONTENT IN PART 1 PROVIDES ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH CARE ECONOMICS. Completely reorganization content examines health and medical care in five chapters, rather than four. Expanded coverage reviews the U.S. system at a crossroads as students study spending issues, health care markets and the economics behind them as well as the implications of welfare.

  • CHAPTER 4 "WELFARE IMPLICATIONS IN MEDICAL MARKETS" CENTRALIZES THIS STUDY OF GOVERNMENT ACTION. Previously, welfare-related details were scattered throughout the book. Now, this streamlined chapter examines all details about the social cost of government action and impediments to competition.

  • EXPANDED EXPLANATIONS CLOSELY EXAMINE THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (ACA) AND ITS IMPACT. Students review how the ACA has changed the current approach to medical care delivery and finance.

  • THREE NEW CHAPTER APPENDICES PROVIDE DETAILS FOR STUDY. A new Chapter 2 appendix examines the use of price indices to adjust nominal medical spending for inflation. A new Chapter 3 appendix continues discussion on causal inference and addresses a major challenge in using observational data in social science and medical research: how to interpret empirical results. Students also learn to differentiate causation and correlation when reading empirical research. A Chapter 5 appendix builds on the discussion of economic evaluation with an empirical approach to performing an evaluation.

  • REORGANIZED PART 4 FOCUSES ON TODAY'S POLICY ENVIRONMENT. All chapters in Part 4 have been restructured to focus on the policy environment as it exists under the Affordable Care Act. New content also addresses changes the country can expect under new federal leadership.

  • UPDATED CONTENT IN CHAPTER 16 DISCUSSES REFORM ALTERNATIVES. Chapter 15 presents policy options drawn from the rest of the developed world. This paves the way for the challenging discussion in Chapter 16 to examine the accomplishments and shortcomings of the current system and focus on an incremental approach to reform.

  • FIRST CHAPTER CLEARLY DEFINES THE BOOK'S AREAS OF CORE FOCUS. Ten key concepts introduced in the first chapter set a unifying theme for the remainder of the text.

  • SPECIAL FEATURES AND SPECIFIC CONTENT STRENGTHENS STUDENT UNDERSTANDING. Each chapter begins with a brief policy issue related to the chapter's focus. In addition, special features called "Issues in Medical Care Delivery" in every chapter summarize critical studies in medical research, epidemiology, public health and other fields to help students see the far-reaching impact of health care economics.

  • COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS KEY CONTRIBUTORS IN HEALTH CARE TODAY. Fascinating profiles of real individuals demonstrate how doctors, economists and other stakeholders can profoundly impact health care economics and policy.

  • SPECIAL LEARNING FEATURE TEACHES HOW TO USE INSIGHTFUL ANALYTICAL MODELS. This edition's "Back of the Envelope" feature encourages students to use models in analyzing and understanding economics. These features address topics such as the valuation of a life, the calculation of a rate of return, the notion of elasticity, the welfare implications of subsidies, the impact of employer mandates, cost-benefit calculations and the cost effectiveness of disease prevention.

  • STRAIGHT-FORWARD DISCUSSION OF "APPLIED MICRO METHODS" DEMONSTRATES HOW THESE ARE USED TO REDUCE ESTIMATION BIAS PRESENT IN OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES. Students examine this bias that serves as the basis of most policy discussions. The book clearly explains the problem of bias and details the four techniques used to correct the bias. Analytical reviews of approximately 20 policy-oriented papers demonstrate the use of these techniques.

  • INTERESTING GLOBAL COMPARISONS PINPOINT DIFFERENCES IN U.S. HEALTHCARE VERSUS OTHER COUNTRIES. This feature compares and contrasts the United States and its lifestyle, cultural and economic characteristics to those of seven other developed countries to help students challenge their assumptions about health care.

  • HELPFUL MARGIN NOTES CLARIFY IMPORTANT CONCEPTS WITHIN CONTEXT AS STUDENTS READ. Students find definitions of key words and phrases, recommended websites for additional information and policy issues related to the reading in the margins.
