  • New cases have been added to the chapter-ending "Case Study" sections, which include a scenario and identifiable learning outcomes, and ask students to complete a series of steps to reinforce their understanding of chapter topics.

  • New topics in the “Professional Focus” features allow students to apply their real-world skills to subjects such as environmental nutrition, international dietary guidelines addressing food waste, the use of social media in advocacy work and the new Code of Ethics for the nutrition and dietetics profession.

  • New Program Planning Tools, such as the RE-AIM framework, help students prepare for program planning and evaluation in community-based settings.

  • All-new full color photos leverage the power of storytelling to demonstrate that food insecurity, the obesity epidemic and other pressing public health issues are challenges facing all communities; that critical investments are needed in the federal nutrition assistance programs and in healthcare; and that grassroots solutions exist to alleviate the effects of poverty, health disparities, and chronic diseases.

  • Clear, concise coverage in Chapter 5 provides a step-by-step analysis of the community needs assessment process, describing the types and sources of data collected about the community, the reasons people eat what they eat, and the questions asked in obtaining information about target populations, including diet assessment methods.

  • “Think Like a Community Nutritionist” features provide questions and activities to help students think analytically and critically about chapter topics, challenging them to step into the role of a community nutritionist to further explore scenarios they may encounter in the field.

  • An appendix provides sample community needs assessment assignments, including one completed by students at California State University Long Beach.

  • "Programs in Action" boxes spotlight successful community nutrition programs such as HIV/AIDS, childhood obesity, behaviorally focused nutrition education programs for children, osteoporosis prevention for female athletes, and farm-to-school initiatives.

  • Chapter-ending learning aids, including Chapter Summaries, Summary Questions, and Internet Resources, enable students to study, self-test, and further explore chapter topics.

  • Full-color endsheets display the DRIs, MyPlate food guidance system, Body Mass Index table, and the latest Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
