  • Linda Brannon

Linda Brannon is a professor in the department of psychology at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she has been teaching since receiving her doctorate. After becoming interested in the emerging field of health psychology, Dr. Brannon and the late Dr. Jess Feist co-authored the first edition of this text in the 1980s. They enjoyed expanding and developing the text along with the field for more than two decades. In addition to her work in health psychology, Dr. Brannon is the author of a text on gender and co-author of an introductory psychology text. She received her Ph.D. in human experimental psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.

  • John A. Updegraff

John Updegraff is a professor of social and health psychology in the department of psychological sciences at Kent State University and an acclaimed undergraduate instructor. An expert in health behavior, health communication, stress and coping, Dr. Updegraff is the recipient of multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health and his research appears in the field's top journals. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from UCLA under the mentorship of pioneering health psychologist Dr. Shelley Taylor.

  • Thoroughly updated, the 10th edition combines coverage of classic and emerging areas of health psychology with accurate yet accessible discussions of the major concepts and findings in the field. It covers the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, provides updates on the dangers of e-cigarettes (Chapter 12), adds subsections on the Type D personality as a risk for heart disease (Chapter 9), explains the brain disease model of alcoholism (Chapter 13) and discusses how exercise improves sleep (Chapter 15).

  • Clear "Learning Objectives" open each major section, helping students focus on the key ideas they will encounter.

  • New "Apply What You've Learned" activities appear at the end of each major section, providing both students and instructors with activities that put chapter concepts into practice and reinforce the learning objectives.

  • The text has been revised throughout to further enhance the engaging writing style that helps to maintain students' interest.

  • An updated, author-curated list of online multimedia links gives students opportunities to broaden and deepen class coverage of the material by further exploring the topics that interest them most.

  • "Real World Profiles" in each chapter introduce people whose lives illustrate the relevance of principles and findings discussed in the text -- helping students view concepts and principles in real-life context and consider how they apply to their own everyday lives.

  • A popular "Q&A" feature at the end of each chapter provides answers to organizing questions posed in the chapter opener, enabling students to revisit and reinforce what they have learned. A media resource section lists references and web links that students can use to expand their knowledge of important health psychology topics.

  • Coverage of physiology and biology is integrated throughout the text rather than placed in a separate chapter. This approach makes it easier for students who lack a biology or science background to understand and appreciate how these subjects relate to health psychology.

  • The text's emphasis on diversity in health psychology includes coverage of international health research; the impact of issues such as ethnicity, age, gender and sexual minority status on health and research; and exploration of the increasing variety in approaches to health care.

  • Numerous feature boxes offer insightful discussions of interesting contemporary topics such as controversy about vaccination, health risks of watching televised sports, chocolate's impact on heart disease, benefits of a cognitively challenging job and how sleep can affect weight.

  • "Real World Profiles" engage student interest and show how course topics and chapter concepts are relevant to situations students encounter in their everyday lives.

  • Placing chapter concepts in a personal context, a health quiz enables students to test their health knowledge as it relates to their own lives.

  • An extensive range of pedagogical features -- including learning objectives, self-checks, feature boxes, Real World Profiles, study aids, applications, hands-on exercises and activities -- are designed to appeal to students, help them fully understand health psychology and make the text more interactive and interesting.
