  • An all-new Psychology of Daily Life feature explores applications of psychology across a wide range of life experiences, including Brain Scanning of Everyday Behaviors (Chapter 2), Holding Hands to Ease Pain (Chapter 3), The Science of Roller Coasters (Chapter 8), Working Out to Work Out Daily Stress (Chapter 10), Does Your College Major Suit Your Personality? (Chapter 11) and Want to be Liked? Try Nodding and Asking Questions (Chapter 12).

  • Throughout the text, Nevid focuses on psychology in the digital world, showing students what researchers are discovering about the psychological impact of using cellphones, the internet and social media. Topics include the psychological effects of physical separation from cellphones, data collection in the smartphone era, links between social media use and lower levels of happiness and life satisfaction, effects of Facebook use on grades, Big Five traits and social networking sites, and more. The Psychology of Daily Life also features important new research on psychology in a digital age.

  • Designed to meet APA guidelines for teaching introductory psychology, the new Bridging Perspectives feature provides a pedagogical structure that emphasizes the integration of different areas or perspectives in psychology. Nevid's unique approach focuses on bridging psychological, biological and sociocultural perspectives around topics such as genes and behavior (Chapter 2), psychology and pain management (Chapter 3), drug abuse treatment (Chapter 4), nature versus nurture (Chapter 7), aging well (Chapter 9), emotions and your heart (Chapter 10), panic disorder (Chapter 13) and more.

  • Numerous TED Talks on psychological topics related to specific chapters are accessible from the text's electronic learning system, MindTap. The talks are accompanied by study questions that instructors can assign as coursework or extra-credit opportunities. TED Talk links are available to non-MindTap users through the companion website.

  • Thoroughly updated with research developments reported in the past three years, this edition includes emerging findings on such topics as COVID-19, "the laughing brain", using a computer to "read" thoughts, use of supportive touch to lower levels of pain, the 2019 discovery of odor receptors in taste cells, the U.S. opioid crisis, gender differences in smiling, the aging of America, the latest APA stress survey results, psychological effects of discrimination, links between social media use and depression, changes in suicide rates, e-therapy modules and apps, and more.

  • Nevid's signature The Brain Loves a Puzzle questions engage student interest and encourage critical thinking by challenging students to think more deeply about information in the text that's needed to solve the puzzles. Topics include why it's impossible to tickle yourself and why someone is less likely to receive help if a street is crowded than if there are only a few people nearby.

  • The text's unique learning-centric approach is designed to help students encode and retain key concepts in psychology. Keystones of the approach include pedagogical tools such as Concept Links that highlight connections among key concepts across chapters, Module Reviews to help students gauge their knowledge of the material, Concept Signaling (another distinctive Nevid feature) that highlights both key concepts and key terms in the text margins and Concept Charts that offer "at-a-glance" summaries of key concepts to reinforce new knowledge.

  • The SQ3R Study Method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) method is used throughout to enhance learning and encourage students to adopt a more active role in the learning process.

  • Chapter-ending visual overviews help students visualize connections among key concepts in summary form so that they better retain what they've learned.

  • The IDEA Model of course assessment -- also unique to Nevid's texts -- maps specific learning goals (tied to APA learning goals) to measurable skills students acquire in their first exposure to psychology. It is designed to be consistent with the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major, Version 2.0.

  • The IDEA Model breaks down learning objectives into four key learning skills: the ability to IDENTIFY key figures in the history of psychology, parts of the nervous system, etc., DEFINE OR DESCRIBE key concepts and key features of major psychological theories, EVALUATE OR EXPLAIN underlying processes and mechanisms of behavior and mental processes and APPLY psychological concepts to examples.

  • Implemented throughout each chapter, the IDEA Model is organized around a listing of learning objectives in the form of active learning verbs that are linked to measurable learning outcomes. The model is integrated with the test-item file, allowing instructors to select items measuring these particular outcomes -- to Identify, Define or Describe, Evaluate or Explain, and Apply knowledge of psychology.

  • PLEASE REMOVE--WON'T BE INCLUDED IN THIS EDITION Chapter preview podcasts bring the author's voice into the learning process to assist students in mastering key concepts. These short audio clips serve as advance organizers by introducing key concepts students will encounter in the chapter. (Available only in the MindTap version.)
