The aim of her hybrid position is to offer assistance in learning the concepts of chemistry and biology both within and outside the classroom. Dr. Rye-McCurdy currently has a rotational schedule teaching GOB chemistry, general chemistry and organic chemistry. Prior to this position she taught biochemistry and introductory biology and physiology courses. She received her B.A. in ACS certified biochemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University and received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University Biochemistry program under the mentorship of Dr. Karin Musier-Forstyh, where she studied the mechanisms of retrovirology (predominately Rous sarcoma virus and HIV). Dr. Rye-McCurdy is involved in community outreach as the co-coordinator of Ohio State Marion’s science and engineering camps for high school and middle school students, and as the co-coordinator of the Marion Area Science and Engineering Fair

  • Ryan J. Yoder

Dr. Yoder previously taught GOB chemistry at Marion before joining the full-time faculty in 2013. He currently teaches organic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses in addition to serving the campus and university community. He received his B.A. in chemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University and received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher Hadad, where he studied computational modeling and organic chemistry. Dr. Yoder mentors undergraduate research students at Marion and Columbus, examining protein-ligand interactions towards therapeutics against threats from chemical weapons and cancer. As a passionate teacher, Dr. Yoder additionally pursues interests in chemical education research. He lives with his wife and two children where he enjoys family time, travel, cooking, golfing, and following sports from around the world.

  • The 15 chapters are thoughtfully and intentionally designed as a framework for the average 15-week semester.

  • A delicate balance between depth and breadth of information allows you to burrow deeper into topics you would like to consider in more detail.

  • A logical progression of problem solving begins with your students getting information, seeing it in practice, and then having the opportunity to use what they’ve just seen to solve a new problem. End-of-chapter exercises are streamlined to focus on the most critical chapter concepts.

  • Organic chemistry topics don't get just a passing reference -- they are skillfully integrated with biochemistry topics like structure representation and nomenclature, building a bridge to students' later studies in health-related fields.
