Overview

Nilsen's WEEK BY WEEK: PLANS FOR DOCUMENTING CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT, 8th Edition, provides an overview of accepted observation and recording methods, including examples and guidance about the advantages and disadvantages of each. Each chapter summarizes a developmental domain to focus your observation skills as you practice a specific recording method. These are integrated into a concrete, systematic plan for recording each child's development in all developmental areas -- a plan that can be extended over 40 weeks while in practicum, field experiences or your own classroom. It provides numerous practical observation forms and integrates NAEYC standards and Developmentally Appropriate Practices and learning objectives. Real-life anecdotes, practical tips, forms with clear instructions and step-by-step guidelines make this a valuable resource for teachers in training and practicing professionals.

  • Instead of being separated into a single chapter, special needs coverage is integrated throughout the 8th Edition, giving readers a broader understanding of children with special needs, helping them seeing each child in their cultural context and demonstrating the concept of inclusion rather than focusing on the exceptionality.
  • Chapters include new discussions on the impact of digital devices and their uses -- both in documentation and on children's development.
  • Expanded coverage of the role of the teacher gives students a realistic model of the complexity of teaching and learning in today's early childhood classrooms -- emphasizing that the role goes well beyond curriculum planning.
  • Thoroughly updated with the latest issues and research, the 8th Edition includes new discussions on the importance of play, neuroscience and how the brain affects learning, how to incorporate STEM into early childhood curriculum and advocacy for the authentic assessment of observation over testing.
  • "Topics in Observation" exercises, along with accompanying discussions, provide valuable insights into child development.
  • "Sharing with Children and Families" offers ideas for talking with families about their child's experiences in school or child care.
  • Sharing personal perspectives, "It Happened to Me" vignettes of classroom experiences illustrate important points about child development through mistakes that became learning opportunities.
  • "Home Visiting" features share practical information for supporting and educating family members in their home.
  • "Helping Professionals" acquaints readers with the different types of specialists to whom teachers may refer family members.
  • Enabling students to put what they learn into action, exercises in each chapter personalize material, fully engage readers and help them focus on key concepts.
