  • Association of Surgical Technologists

The oldest and most widely recognized professional organization, the Association of Surgical Technologists represents more than 80,000 surgical technologists. Its primary purpose is to ensure that surgical technologists have the knowledge and skills to administer patient care of the highest quality.

  • Chapter One (Introduction to Surgical Technology) has expanded information regarding career development, resume planning and interview preparation for the CST, plus a new section on management and leadership.

  • Chapter Three (The Surgical Patient) is now a combination of what was previously two chapters (The Surgical Patient and Special Populations). It has been revised to reflect current information and standards in treating vulnerable populations. Terminology has been updated in reference to specific patient populations (for example, "patient with diabetes" instead of "diabetic patient" and "older adult patient" instead of "geriatric patient").

  • Chapter Four (Physical Environment and Safety Standards) includes additional details about operating room furniture (including back table, mayo stands, ring stands and anesthesia carts) as well as safety guidelines for ionizing radiation, electrical hazards, fire hazards, laser fire hazards and sharps.

  • Chapter Five (Technological Science Concepts), which was previously Chapter 6 (Biomedical Science and Minimally Invasive Surgery), has been completely revised and reorganized.

  • Chapter Six, now called Principles of Microbiology, contains new information and expanded information from Chapter Seven of the 5th Edition (now divided into two chapters).

  • Chapter Seven, now called Surgical Asepsis and Sterility: Best Practices and Techniques, contains new information and expanded information from Chapter Seven of the 5th Edition (now divided into two chapters).

  • Chapter Eight (Emergency Situations and All-Hazards Preparation) has been edited to present information that is pertinent to the CST.

  • Chapter 11 is now titled Hemostasis, Wound Healing and Wound Closure in order to highlight its emphasis on hemostasis.

  • Chapter 12, now titled Preoperative Surgical Case Management, contains material from Chapter 12 of the 5th Edition (now divided into two chapters).

  • Chapter 13 is now titled Intraoperative and Postoperative Surgical Case Management. It contains material from Chapter 12 of the 5th Edition (now divided into two chapters).

  • Chapter 15 is a new chapter titled Minimally Invasive Applications. It contains new information addressing robotics and interventional radiology along with material from Chapter Six of the 5th Edition.

  • Chapters 16-26 are surgical procedure chapters. Several new procedures were added to meet the requirements of the Core Curriculum, 7th Edition, plus several MIS procedures to include robotically-assisted procedures.

  • Helping students maximize their course success, the accompanying "Study Guide and Lab Manual" has been completely revised to precisely correlate with the text curriculum.

  • Preparing students for what they will experience in real-world practice, technique boxes highlight skills required in most operative procedures, such as donning and removing surgical attire and setting up the operating room.

  • Offering valuable insight from seasoned practitioners, "Surgical Technique Reminders" from CSTs in the field equip students with practical knowledge that can only come from years of practitioner experience.

  • Case studies with critical thinking questions open and close each chapter with real-life applications, helping students put what they learn into practice.

  • The innovative "A Positive Care" memory tool helps students reinforce their thought processes.

  • Extremely student-friendly, the text includes full-color anatomy and surgical procedure drawings to ensure learners gain a thorough understanding of key concepts.

  • "End-of-Chapter Questions for Further Study" challenge students to apply concepts before they progress to the next topics.
