  • Jonathan R. White

Jonathan R. White is professor of honors, emeritus, in the Frederik Meijer Honors College of Grand Valley State University. The founding director of GVSU's School of Criminal Justice, Dr. White was promoted to dean of social sciences and served there until he was summoned to the Bureau of Justice Assistance to direct the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) program after the attacks of 9/11. He conducted counterterrorism training for law enforcement and military forces in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and throughout the United States. A recognized expert on religious terrorism, Dr. White taught classes on national security, intelligence analysis and counterterrorism in the Meijer Honors College.

  • Steven Chermak

Steven Chermak is a professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University and an investigator for the National Counterterrorism, Innovation, Technology, and Education Center. His research on terrorism, cyberterrorism, school shootings and mass shootings has led to the development of four databases using open source materials. The Extremist Crime Database, which Dr. Chermak created in collaboration with Professor Joshua Freilich (John Jay College of Criminal Justice), is a first of its kind national database on criminal activities involving U.S. far right, far left and jihadist extremists and includes data on violent and financial crimes, characteristics of violent groups and the nature of foiled plots. The American School Shooting Study database, which Dr. Chermak developed with Dr. Joshua D. Freilich and Nadine Connell, covers all fatal and nonfatal shootings occurring on school grounds since 1990, including characteristics of incidents, perpetrators and schools. The Mass Shooting Database includes all mass shooting events occurring in the United States since 1990. With funding from the NCITE Center and the Department of Homeland Security, Dr. Chermak also is in the process of building a database of cyberterrorism incidents.

  • Thoroughly updated, the 10th edition includes expanded coverage of lone wolf attacks, theories of radicalization (Ch. 2); terrorism financing with counterfeited products, money dirtying (Ch. 3); media impact, contagion effect, cyberterrorism (Ch. 4); suicide bombers, women in terrorism, WMD threats (Ch. 5); Basque Nation and Liberty (ETA), Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (Ch. 6); Boko Haram, al Shabaab (Ch. 7); international jihad, Syrian civil war (Ch. 8); al Qaeda and ISIS updates (Ch. 11); far right, far left and jihadist activities in the U.S. (Ch. 12); drones, FISA, the SONY and other hacking attacks (Ch. 16); and more.

  • MindTap for Terrorism and Homeland Security, 10th Edition, has met the Quality Matters Review Standards and is Quality Matters Certified. For more information, visit qualitymatters.org.

  • Chapter 3 on terrorist financing now includes expanded discussions on money laundering and money dirtying tactics, national and international efforts to control terrorist financing and money laundering, underground economies, how ISIS funds its activities, the Hawala system, intelligence gathering on financial terrorism and the debate on narcoterrorism.

  • Completely revised and reorganized, Chapter 5 on tactics and gender roles in terrorism examines all topics -- including gender -- within a tactical framework. With new gender research and expanded material on women and terrorism, it explores the important roles women play in nationalistic, ideological and religious groups as well as how Arab women are uniting and empowering themselves against the war on terror. New coverage on gender and suicide bombing is also included.

  • Highlighting the impact of sociopolitical events on domestic terrorism, Chapter 12 discusses current threats from the far right, far left and jihadist extremists as well as efforts to respond. Current research updates on the level of extremist violence in the United States informs the chapter's coverage of growing threats from militia and other far right groups, tactics, strategies and the memberships of different types of groups.

  • Prompting students to think more deeply about what they have read, new end-of-chapter features include "What Do You Think?" questions for reflecting or writing and "Exercising Your Skills" activities asking students to apply what they have learned to a practical problem. For example, in Chapter 2, students are asked to create a comprehensive definition of radicalization and then examine it to assess whether it violates the First Amendment.

  • "Expanding the Concept" boxes help students take a deeper dive on important chapter topics, such as "Advantages of the Hawala System", "The Most Common Tactic of Terrorism" and "As Sahaab versus al Hurra".

  • Chapter learning objectives help readers focus on key concepts, which are further reinforced in end-of-chapter "Chapter Take Aways" and "Objective Summary" sections -- maximizing students' study time and course success.

  • Many chapters include an "Another Perspective" boxed feature illustrating that issues in terrorism and homeland security often go beyond a simple two-sided debate. These insightful features introduce controversial opinions and alternative understandings of social processes, giving students a deeper understanding of all the challenges involved. Topics include "Force Multipliers", "The PKK By Any Other Name" and "Media Ownership".

  • Terrorism frequently blurs the line between law enforcement and national security intelligence. The text's unique emphasis on intelligence helps students see the difference. Sections in Part IV spotlight law enforcement intelligence systems, fusion centers and national security intelligence -- equipping students with a solid understanding of today's intelligence initiatives.
