  • The latest edition of BECOMING A MASTER STUDENT -- now subtitled MAKING THE CAREER CONNECTION -- has a new chapter structure. The Communicating chapter focuses on writing well, making effective presentations and creating digital content. The new Relationships chapter provides effective strategies for deep listening, assertive speaking, conflict resolution and cultural competence. In addition, the new Career chapter equips students with the tools to persist until graduation, take charge of their work lives and engage in lifelong learning.

  • Journal entries now include discovery and intention statements, further reinforcing the proven Master Student Process -- the continuous cycle of insight, planning and action.

  • Master Student Profiles have been refreshed with six new stories about people who used strategies presented in the text to overcome real-life challenges, giving students examples of chapter concepts in action.

  • The 17th edition addresses health and wellness issues across chapters, including new strategies for maintaining mental health in environments such as a pandemic.

  • Bringing chapter concepts to life, many visuals throughout the text now include prompts for critical and creative thinking.

  • Each chapter has been revised to align with instructional objectives for student success courses.

  • The entire text has been thoroughly revised and updated with the latest facts, examples and references to technology. It also incorporates the bias-free and inclusive language recommendations of the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition.

  • The popular Career Connection feature at the end of each chapter suggests ways for students to transfer skills from the classroom to the workplace. Each Career Connection ends with an example that gives readers an up-close look what these transfers look like in practice.

  • Chapters begin with Power Processes -- short, unique motivational articles that emphasize academic success in terms of life skills and behaviors. Applying Power Process strategies empowers students in academics, work and life.

  • The Discovery Wheel -- the text's signature feature -- provides an activity that challenges readers to think about the kind of students they are versus the kind of students they want to become. Its 11 sections correspond to the 11 chapters in the text. Assigned at the outset of the course, this exercise helps students assess their current strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the course, students will be able to measure their progress by retaking the Discovery Wheel.

  • The text includes Dr. David Kolb's Learning Style Inventory to help students discover their preferred learning style. While every individual is capable of employing all four modes in the LSI, most people have a preferred way of learning. The LSI helps students become more aware of their preferred learning style as well as discover new options for achieving goals, solving problems, listening more fully, speaking more persuasively and resolving interpersonal conflicts.

  • As students progress through the chapters, journal prompts ask them to explain the whys, whats and hows of applying the chapter skills to themselves in writing -- providing instructors a more specific and measurable form of journal writing than any other text. Journaling gives students the opportunity to reflect on their discoveries while creating a plan for action by writing their intentions.

  • Exercises throughout the chapters help students develop critical thinking and encourage active learning.

  • Master Student Profiles in each chapter contain brief articles about a real person who exhibits master student qualities, with a diverse set including Peyton King, Tran Pham and José Cordova.

  • PRACTICING CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES. Exercises throughout the chapters help students develop critical thinking and encourage active learning.

  • MASTER STUDENT PROFILES. In each chapter, Master Student Profiles contain brief articles about a real person who encompasses master student qualities, with a diverse set including Ramit Sethi, Maria Popova, and Leo Babauta.

  • SKILLS SNAPSHOT. The Skills Snapshot activity ends each chapter. Students link their initial Discovery Wheel answers to what they've learned about the chapter skills and make their intentions for how they plan to implement the skill in their academic success.

  • The Discovery and Intention Journal Entry system. As students make their way through the chapters, journal prompts ask students to explain the whys, whats, and hows of applying the chapter skills to themselves in writing, and offers instructors a more specific and measurable form of journal writing than any other text. Students have an opportunity to reflect on their discoveries while setting an plan for action by writing their intentions.
