Dave Ellis is a leadership coach, author, educator and philanthropist. A respected lecturer and electrifying workshop leader, he has captivated audiences worldwide since first sharing his principles in 1979. Ellis got started in education in 1976, when he taught junior high school math. After earning a master's degree in mathematics, he taught computer science for six years at National American University, where he became assistant dean of student services. In 1979, he designed a course to improve student retention and then traveled the country for a decade conducting workshops for teachers on ways to improve student retention and test scores. He began training coaches in 1983 and started a public course for coaches in 1993. He puts into practice the principles he teaches, utilizing his remarkable system in his own life. Friends and colleagues often describe him as the happiest person they know with an amazingly wonderful life. He is president of Breakthrough Enterprises, a publishing and consulting company, as well as founder and president of The Brande Foundation, a nonprofit organization offering assistance to organizations working toward world sufficiency, environmental integrity, human rights and personal transformation. Ellis has contributed millions of dollars to the work of his foundation and other organizations. You can visit his website at www.fallingawake.com. Ellis lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Trisha. They have four daughters and six grandchildren.

  • UP-TO-DATE AND INCLUSIVE. The entire text has been thoroughly revised to update facts, examples and references to technology -- and also to incorporate the bias-free and inclusive language recommendations in the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition.
  • CAREER CONNECTION. This new feature at the end of each chapter suggests ways for students to transfer skills from the classroom to the workplace. Each Career Connection ends with a journal entry that prompts students to design a specific behavior change for making this transfer.
  • REVISED TABLE OF CONTENTS. The information literacy chapter now immediately follows the reading chapter, helping students make a more direct connection between these two related sets of skills.
  • INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES. Each chapter has been revised to align with instructional objectives for student success courses.
  • CAREER RESOURCES. The text's new subtitle -- MAKING THE CAREER CONNECTION -- reflects its wealth of career planning tools.
  • STUDENT REFLECTION. Revised captions for images throughout the text include prompts for personal reflection and critical thinking.
  • DISCOVERY AND INTENTION STATEMENTS. Throughout the text, journal entries now include discovery and intention statements that further reinforce the Master Student Process -- the continuous cycle of insight, planning and action.
  • INTENTION STATEMENTS. Numerous intention statements prompt students to plan habit changes based on the research of BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford University and author of the bestselling TINY HABITS: THE SMALL CHANGES THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING.
  • JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF AUTO-GRADED CONTENT Let us take care of the basics so you can focus on teaching. Infuse textbook chapter readings, comprehension checks or end-of-chapter quizzes personalized to your text of choice.
  • A DEDICATED TEAM YOU CAN COUNT ON We're here at every step. Access award-winning support 24/7, or take advantage of on-demand resources including user guides and more.
  • SERIOUSLY SIMPLE COURSE SETUP Get up and running quickly and easily. Search content organized by chapter and infuse publisher-provided readings and assessments straight into your course in just a few clicks.
  • DO YOU HAVE A MINUTE? The "Do you have a minute?" boxes throughout help students put the skills they are learning into practice right away -- in one minute or less. This proactive approach enables students to immediately apply the core skills of THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO BECOMING A MASTER STUDENT.
  • LEVERAGES THE FUNCTIONALITY OF YOUR LMS No need to learn a new technology; utilize the familiar functionality your LMS provides, enabling you to use content as-is from day one.
  • MASTER STUDENT METACOGNITIVE APPLICATION PROCESS. Each chapter opens with a Master Student Metacognitive Application Process that provides a framework to guide readers in monitoring thinking and learning. A reasoning model based on David Kolb's experiential learning theory, the MAP helps students understand why the chapter matters, what is included and how they can use the material to create new possibilities for their lives.
