  • Up-to-date reflection and research highlight the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and well-being of people around the world. Pandemic-related research published since late spring 2020 is reviewed and integrated into existing chapter topics.

  • The new edition includes an increased focus on disability and the experience of people with disabilities. Although disability is a form of diversity similar to gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and social class, among other categories, few psychology texts make a concerted effort to review disability-related issues. The 13th edition of PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO MODERN LIFE is a standout exception.

  • Two new box features have been added to the book. Adjustment in a Diverse World helps students understand and appreciate how people differ from and complement one another's outlooks and experiences. Adjustment and Technology explores how the ever changing and advancing digital world affects us.

  • Updated learning objectives appear at the start of each of the sections in every chapter. These learning outcomes inform both instructors and students about the relevant skills and knowledge that can be acquired in the course of study -- enabling students to apply, analyze or evaluate related material and maximize their study time.

  • Supporting students' course success, the thorough end-of-chapter pedagogy includes a "Key Ideas" bulleted summary of the chapter's main points, a "Key Terms" list of important vocabulary, a "Key People" review of important thinkers and a practice test with answer key, enabling students to self-check their retention of key chapter content.

  • The 13th edition of PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO MODERN LIFE: ADJUSTMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY received a careful and thoughtful review for diversity, equity and inclusion. Following the recommendations of the 7th edition of the PUBLICATION MANUAL OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, the text now relies on gender inclusive language. For example, the singular pronouns "he" and "she" have been replaced with the plural pronouns "they" and "their". Similarly, the dated term "freshmen" has been replaced with "first-year students".

  • PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO MODERN LIFE: ADJUSTMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY provides a comprehensive introduction to the psychology of adjustment in a compact, 16-chapter format, complemented by a Personal Explorations Workbook.

  • The Personal Explorations Workbook is included in the back of the text -- after references and indexes -- to enable easier access by students. Experiential exercises, questionnaires and personality tests help students better understand themselves and their attitudes toward a variety of subjects. These exercises are printed on high-quality perforated paper that students can turn in -- giving instructors the flexibility to assign them as homework.

  • "Recommended Readings" throughout the text serve as mini book reviews of the most influential self-help books published. The reviews cover classic titles as well as current releases.
