Overview

As climate change effects become increasingly important in today’s world, Moaveni’s ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, AND SUSTAINABILITY helps students understand what each issue means and why it is critical to understand them. Readers learn how environmentally sound decisions involve evaluating energy and environmental footprints as well as the natural resources that are consumed to make products. Students gain an understanding of how much energy it takes to manufacture, produce, transport, use, and dispose of products. Each chapter begins with clear learning objectives and concludes with a helpful summary. Relevant, everyday examples clarify concepts. Hands-on end-of-chapter problems require students to gather and analyze information as well as prepare brief reports and presentations. Students strengthen written and oral communication skills as well as their abilities to work in teams as many problems require group work and some even require whole-class participation.

  • KEY CONCEPTS ARE HIGHLIGHTED AND DEFINED. Important concepts and definitions appear in special boxes throughout the book. The concepts are indexed at the end of each chapter so students can easily return to the definitions for review and study.
  • END-OF-CHAPTER PROBLEMS AND PRACTICE EMPHASIZE PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS. Carefully developed hands-on problems, projects, and critical assessment ensure that your students can apply and extend what they have learned.
  • COMPREHENSIVE, PROFESSIONAL VOCABULARY ENABLES STUDENTS TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY. This book emphasizes the importance of developing a complete vocabulary to persuade and converse about today’s pressing issues. This feature promotes understanding of basic terminology by asking students to state the meaning of new words that have been introduced in a section.
  • RELEVANT EXAMPLES ENGAGE READERS. Everyday, interesting examples illuminate the concepts for your students, highlighting the significance of the subject matter from scientific, social, and personal perspectives.
  • “BEFORE YOU GO ON” SELF-CHECKS ENABLE READERS TO ENSURE THEIR PERSONAL UNDERSTANDING. This feature encourages students to test their comprehension and understanding of the material just discussed by answering questions before they continue to the next section.
  • CHAPTER SUMMARIES EMPHASIZE THE CONCEPTS THAT STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE MASTERED. Each chapter concludes by summarizing what the student should have gained from that chapter. These summaries are designed to help students comprehend and become proficient with the materials.
  • CHAPTER OPENERS SERVE AS DISCUSSION STARTERS. Each chapter begins with a captivating opening vignette that engages the student and promotes meaningful discussion based on the chapter content.
  • RESEARCH PROBLEMS ALLOW STUDENTS TO EXTEND THEIR LEARNING BEYOND THE BOOK. Intriguing research problems encourage students to solve problems using the Internet and traditional research methods as they practice to become lifelong learners.
  • COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS. These critical practice opportunities emphasize the importance of developing good written and oral communication skills.
  • COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE IS APPLICABLE TO LEARNERS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS AND CAREERS. The author addresses the issues of energy, environment, and sustainability using an approach that appeals to today’s general education audience and reinforces the importance of these topics.
  • “APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED” FEATURES HIGHLIGHT PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS. This unique feature encourages your students to apply what they have learned to an interesting problem or a typical situation. To emphasize the importance of teamwork and to encourage group participation, many of these problems require group work.
  • CHAPTER OBJECTIVES ARE HIGHLIGHTED AND INTEGRATED THROUGHOUT EACH CHAPTER. Helpful Chapter Objectives appear at the beginning of each chapter and are revisited throughout the chapter. The chapter objectives are also highlighted within the chapter summary.
  • TEAMWORK PROBLEMS ENCOURAGE GROUP PARTICIPATION. Students learn to work effectively as part of small or large groups as they complete a variety of problems.
  • LIFE-LONG LEARNING ICONS EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF KEY INFORMATION. Problems that depict and apply concepts that are critical for life-long learning are clearly denoted by an icon to draw attention to their importance.
