Therapy that effects change must authentically involve you, the therapist. Engaging, readable, and immediately helpful with clients, INTERPERSONAL PROCESS IN THERAPY: AN INTEGRATIVE MODEL brings together various theories into a cohesive framework that centers on the therapeutic relationship. It shows you practical ways to intervene with your clients, while addressing and alleviating the concerns new therapists often have -- such as worrying about making "mistakes." It also provides clear guidelines for effective (and ineffective) ways to establish a working alliance, address resistance and resolve ruptures in the therapeutic relationship, help clients transition from surface conversation to their key concerns, respond to clients' painful feelings, develop a focus for treatment, and more. Featuring new case examples and updated research, the seventh edition's extensive clinical vignettes and sample therapist-client dialogues will bring you "in the room" with the therapist.

  • Available online in MindTap®, video demonstrations of the authors role-playing key concepts and prototypic therapist-client interactions help students make the transition from studying a textbook to applying clinical techniques.

  • An expanded clinical application of attachment theory helps trainees better understand the symptoms and problems their adult clients bring to treatment, how their clients interact with them during sessions, and the kinds of therapeutic responses that will be helpful and ineffective for different clients.

  • Developing therapists often struggle to shift the dialogue from everyday conversation to core concerns. This edition provides clear guidelines, along with illustrative examples, for when and how to engage clients on key feelings and concerns throughout each phase of treatment.

  • Updated throughout with new case examples and research, this edition has also been honed and pared with an eye toward being as concise as possible for busy readers.

  • A glossary of terms helps to ensure that students learn the common language of the complex yet exciting field they are entering.

  • To help student therapists make the transition from concepts to application, extensive therapist-client dialogues and clinical vignettes in every chapter show trainees how they can move beyond surface topics and engage their clients in highly meaningful and change-producing ways.

  • Online videos of the authors role-playing important clinical concepts and prototypic therapist-client interactions accompany the text. These visual demonstrations transform the learning process.

  • This integrative text brings together the interpersonal/relational components from different theoretical approaches and provides specific intervention guidelines for using the therapist-client relationship to effect change.

  • Students will find programmatic guidelines for writing case conceptualizations/treatment plans and process notes within the interpersonal process framework.

  • Contemporary case studies develop multicultural awareness and demonstrate how cultural and familial context influences client presentation and treatment planning.

  • The book offers in-depth coverage of the role of attachment throughout the lifespan and the burgeoning research literature on attachment-informed therapy, including attachment-related affects (such as shame), and how clients' differing attachment styles influence the problems they bring and the way they present in treatment.
