  • In-text pedagogy -- featuring the PQ4R method of learning and studying: preview, question, read, reflect, relate, and review -- has been fine-tuned to better promote students' learning. The questions are now more regularly spaced, comprising the second level heads of every topic. In addition, the summary reviews at the conclusion of each chapter now show the chapter's major heads converted into questions, with the questions then answered.

  • The popular "Truth-or-Fiction" feature has been improved. The "Truth-or-Fiction Revisited" items have been redesigned to increase their prominence. The explanations of what is truth and what is fiction have been expanded and clarified to enhance students' interest as well as the features' pedagogical power.

  • This edition is updated to include the categories of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association. The revised DSM is connected with changes throughout the text, as found, for example, in the new types of emotional problems experienced by many women following childbirth ("post-partum"), and in changes to issues such as substance use and substance use disorders, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

  • Updated throughout, the sixth edition includes hundreds of new references to the latest theory, research, and practice.

  • "A Closer Look -- Research" boxes focus on contemporary techniques and issues in developmental research, and include boxes on ethics, the impact of genes on delinquency, mixed-age preschool classrooms, scaffolding, prejudice, and math education.

  • "A Closer Look - -Diversity" boxes address challenging issues as to how children and adolescents are influenced by their ethnic backgrounds and gender roles.

  • "A Closer Look -- Real Life" boxes show the many ways in which theories and research in development can be applied in students' worlds. They cover such topics as treating bed-wetting, sex selection, advice for expectant fathers, birthing options, and guidelines for infant nutrition.

  • The book's chronological organization takes students from the micro world of genetics and neuroscience to the macro world of a child's growth, from infancy through adolescence.

  • The text utilizes the proven PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Relate, and Review) active-learning approach, which is an integral part of each chapter.

  • Each chapter begins with a "Truth or Fiction?" feature. These stimulating true/false statements entice students to delve into the subject matter by challenging folklore and common sense. For instance, items in Chapter 3 and 7, respectively, state: "Babies can be born addicted to narcotics and drugs" and "Child abusers have frequently been the victims of child abuse themselves". "Truth or Fiction Revisited" sections are found throughout the chapters and provide an analysis of the truth or falsehood of the statements posed at the beginning of the chapter.
