Darrell Ebbing has taught general chemistry for more than thirty years and is now retired from Wayne State University. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Indiana University.

Steven D. Gammon is the Provost at the University of Maine Fort Kent. In this role he continues to be engaged in working to provide exceptional educational experiences for students in chemistry, the sciences and other disciplines.

  • Each of the Example Problems have been formatted to provide a clearer path for student learning and the parallel OWLv2 Interactive Examples have been reimagined to better match the problem-solving approach and tools in the book.
  • New material was added explaining the modern view of bonding in central atoms having more than eight valence electrons.
  • New Capstone Problems have been added to a number of chapters.
  • Throughout the text, the authors adopted IUPAC periodic table conventions.
  • Throughout the text, the authors adopted the terms “atomic weight”, “molecular weight”, and “formula weight” in place of corresponding terms “atomic mass”, “molecular mass”, and “formula mass”.
  • The discussion of electrostatic potential maps and the application of formal charge were improved.
  • Essays have been added, updated, and revised to reflect current understanding of a variety of relevant topics. Several “A Chemist Looks At” essays, including “Carbon Dioxide Gas and the Greenhouse Effect,” “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR),” “Acid Rain,” “Limestone Caves,” and “Superconductivity”, were updated. New essays on “The Discovery of New Elements” and “Lithium-Ion Batteries” were added.
  • The essay series “A Chemist Looks At…” includes many contemporary topics, such as “The Discovery of New Elements” and “Lithium-Ion Batteries.” The essays on “Instrumental Methods” describe modern methods in chemistry, such as NMR and mass spectrometry. Both series of essays have accompanying end-of-chapter problems to help integrate the essays into the course.
  • A major feature of the text is the problem-solving program set forth in each Example Problem. The “Gaining Mastery Toolbox” lays out the critical concept involved in the problem, as well as the essential ideas required in its solution. After the problem statement, the example describes the problem strategy, followed by the solution and answer check (reminding the student of a vital step in problem-solving: reviewing the result for reasonableness). Interactive versions of examples are assignable in OWLv2.
  • In each chapter, “A Checklist for Review” is laid out to provide a variety of review help to students with different ways of learning. This checklist includes a summary of facts and concepts given in the chapter, a list of learning objectives and important terms, and a list of key equations described in the text.
  • A wide variety of end-of-chapter problem types are available to meet the demands of today’s varied students. This includes “Conceptual Problems” to help the student understand the basic concepts. In addition to a wealth of basic problem sets, there are also “Strategy Problems” to challenge students and “Capstone Problems” that combine skills from earlier chapters.

The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry

Michael and Laurie maintain a website, Survivechem.com. Cengage owns the website and the survivechem domain. Michael will continue to maintain the website, but the website will link out to Cengagebrain for all purchases that come through the website. Cengage will keep the website active in an effort to support the Student Representative Program that Michael and his marketing director have established. Keeping the website active also helps to promotes the story that THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING GENERAL CHEMISTRY is a survival guide written by a student for students. The website, with a Facebook presence, also advances direct-to-student purchase opportunities. Cengage is also adding a purchasing link within Owlv2 (linked to cengagebrain) so that students can choose to purchase THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING GENERAL CHEMISTRY at any time from within Olwv2. We will also include a pop-up purchase opportunity within Olwv2 when students fall into the C range. The purpose of the pop-up is to position additional content so that it is available at the point of need. Students aren't always aware of the resources available to help them when they start to falter. The pop-up purchase provides a real solution designed to assist them the moment they need help. Michael has developed a Student Representative Program. For this program, Michael has recruited students to help sell his books on campus to other students. Since Michael is no longer on campus, his recruiting efforts are done through Facebook and his website. Michael is exploring other social media options as well. Cengage is working closely with Michael to explore the potential of this program. Because sales representatives do not sell directly to students, the Student Representative program is another way to drive sales and awareness of the book. There is also potential to use Michael's student representative program to work in conjunction with Cengage sales representatives and the Bookstore Stocking Program.

Survival Guide for General Chemistry with Math Review and Proficiency Questions

This survival guide focuses on helping students practice for exams and shows them how to solve difficult problems by dissecting them into manageable chunks. Written in the style of a student meeting with an instructor during office hours, it addresses the most frequently asked questions. This approach leads to the three levels approach – A, B, and minimal – to dissect a typical difficult question into manageable chunks and quickly build student confidence to master the knowledge needed to succeed in the course. This book is available for students to purchase at www.CENGAGEbrain.com or available for packaging with any Cengage textbook.

Lab Manual Experiments in General Chemistry

Each experiment in this manual was selected to match topics in the textbook and includes an introduction, a procedure, a page of pre-lab exercises about the concepts the lab illustrates, and a report form. Some have a scenario that places the experiment in a real-world context and there are experiments designed for inquiry learning with limited guidance. For this edition, minor updates have been made to the lab manual to address some safety concerns. A new reminder was added to the safety section of the preface reminding readers to consult manufacturer’s data sheets. Experiment 5A was removed completely due to the use of mercury. Experiment 5B includes a new safety reminder in the experiment procedures cautioning students to use no more than one gram of potassium chlorate. Experiment 22A has been removed completely due to concern about the skin contact hazards.
