Dr. Robert E. Van Voorst is Professor of New Testament Studies at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and former professor of religion at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1995. He has served as a visiting professor in Oxford University and Zhejiang University in China. Van Voorst has written frequently on religious studies in noted journals and reference works. In addition, he has authored numerous books, including six with Cengage Learning: RELG: WORLD, 3rd Edition; READINGS IN CHRISTIANITY, 3rd Edition; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES, 9th Edition; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES: EASTERN RELIGIONS; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES: WESTERN RELIGIONS; and READING THE NEW TESTAMENT TODAY, now also in a Chinese version. Other books by Van Voorst include BUILDING YOUR NEW TESTAMENT GREEK VOCABULARY, 3rd Edition; THE ASCENTS OF JAMES, a recovery and commentary on a second-century Jewish-Christian document; and JESUS OUTSIDE THE NEW TESTAMENT, an examination of traditions about Jesus in ancient classical and Jewish documents, now also in Italian.

  • Chapter 1, "Scripture Among the World's Religions," now examines the role of the study of scriptures in interfaith dialogue, in particular, the growing "Scriptural Reasoning" movement.

  • Buddhism can be a "mind-bending" religion for most American students, and Chapter 3 helps them understand it. The introduction has been revised and expanded for greater clarity. Now the chapter also includes a fuller selection of Zen koans and a selection of Tibetan magical formulas to help students comprehend popular Buddhism.

  • Chapter 6 includes a new reading on the Confucian concept of the Mandate of Heaven, important for Chinese attitudes to governments. In Chapter 11, a new section covers early Pauline views on special church ministry, important for understanding the varieties of ministries that continue today.

  • ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD RELIGIONS is the only anthology to include selections from the Sharia. New readings on Muslim laws governing almsgiving (zakat) and approved foods have been added to Chapter 12, with extensive annotations to explain these legal readings to students. These selections deal with topics accessible to students, and less controversial and emotion-laden than the Sharia laws on criminal punishments so prevalent in the headlines recently.

  • More than a dozen new photos have been added to help students visualize the uses of scripture treated in the text. Other anthologies do not feature pictures or other illustrations.

  • This ninth edition is available in print and digitally as MindTap®. MindTap is designed to help students master the material. Interactive videos, animations, and activities create a learning path designed by your instructor to guide you through the course and focus on what's important.

  • Buddhism can be a "mind-bending" religion for some students, and if you're one of them, this book can help you understand it. A clear introduction to Chapter 3, "Buddhism," puts the religion and the readings that follow in a meaningful context. New readings, including a selection of Zen koans (puzzling or paradoxical statements to be meditated upon) and a selection of Tibetan magical formulas, also help you to comprehend popular Buddhism.

  • New readings allow you to explore the Confucian concept of the Mandate of Heaven, important for Chinese attitudes to government (Chapter 6). Also, a new section covers early Pauline views on special church ministry, important for understanding the varieties of ministries in first-century Christianity, many of which continue today (Chapter 11).

  • New readings from the Sharia, on Muslim laws governing almsgiving (zakat) and approved foods, have been added to Chapter 12, with extensive annotations to help you understand these legal readings.

  • More than a dozen new photos have been added to help you visualize the uses of scripture treated in the text.

  • To promote comprehension of the material and critical thinking, the text provides introductions to the readings, charts of scripture canons with timelines, extensive footnotes for the more difficult items in the readings (which clarify terms and explain cultural and historical references), questions for study and discussion, and a glossary with pronunciations.

  • A chapter on new religious movements offers insight into the history, teachings, and practices of Baha'i, Christian Science, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Unification Church, and Falun Gong.

  • Scriptural charts, which appear in each chapter, function as a visual guide to the material.

  • An insert with maps shows the geography and history of many of the religions discussed in the text.
