ESSENTIALS OF METEOROLOGY, 8th Edition, is written for students interested in gaining insights into the dynamic workings of the atmosphere. The authors' ability to explain relatively complicated ideas in an easy-to-understand way lets both science and nonscience majors visualize the principles of meteorology. Online animations help you to immediately apply the text material and understand the underlying meteorological principles, and appendices allow you to explore meteorological data such as world temperature extremes and precipitation extremes over a 30-year period.

  • C. Donald Ahrens

Don Ahrens is Professor Emeritus at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. He has influenced countless professionals in the field of atmospheric science as well as hundreds of thousands of students who use his books to better understand weather and climate. In 2007, the National Weather Association awarded him a lifetime achievement award for these accomplishments. The bestselling author of two Cengage texts, Professor Ahrens received the Textbook and Academic Authors Association's McGuffey Longevity Award for the 9th Edition of his market-leading METEOROLOGY TODAY.

  • Robert Henson

Robert Henson is a meteorologist and science writer at The Weather Company and a former science writer at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, the organization that manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research. An expert on tornadoes, thunderstorms and hurricanes, he also has analyzed how TV weathercasters cover major storms and report on climate change. Henson is the author of four books on meteorology, including THE THINKING PERSON'S GUIDE TO CLIMATE CHANGE (previously THE ROUGH GUIDE TO CLIMATE CHANGE), which was shortlisted for the UK Royal Society Prize for Science Books.

  • RESTRUCTURED INTRODUCTION. To help draw students into the topic of meteorology, an opening section on the nature and importance of the scientific method is now followed by a summary of extreme weather events, including recent hurricanes, the U.S. tornado outbreaks of 2012, and the devastating regional floods of 2015-16.

  • ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATIONS. This chapter has been revised and expanded to give students an integrated understanding of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation, including their effects on weather and climate.

  • WEATHER FORECASTING. Enhanced features include a graphic explanation of various types of satellite imagery, as well as a restructured explanation of watches, warnings, and forecasts of various durations.

  • SEVERE WEATHER. An expanded section covers both flash flooding and river flooding and their connection to thunderstorms, including examples from Colorado (2013) and Texas and Oklahoma (2015). A new Focus box explores the baffling damage patterns that tornadoes can produce.

  • CLIMATE CHANGE. New graphics and text explore conclusions from the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report, including greenhouse gas emission pathways and their importance. The Paris Accord is discussed in the context of the Kyoto Protocol that preceded it.

  • THOROUGH COVERAGE features a topic presentation that moves from atmospheric elements, air temperature, and air pressure to atmospheric motion, cyclonic development, severe weather, and finally to climate and global change. The modular organization gives you the flexibility to cover chapters in any order you wish.

  • INCORPORATING RECENT FINDINGS AND EVENTS, the text includes new, revised, or updated material on such topics as the East Coast snowstorm of January 2016, the severe flooding over the Southern Plains and Southeast in 2015, the role of drylines in producing severe weather, the unusually quiet solar cycle of the last decade, the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide beyond 400 ppm, and the devastating impacts of both indoor and outdoor air pollution.

  • MINDTAP FOR METEOROLOGY provides access to the entire book, as well as engaging animations, assessments, and review materials.

  • IN-TEXT BRIEF "REVIEWS" enable students to check their understanding of concepts before moving on.

  • A REMOVABLE CLOUD CHART allows students to identify clouds wherever they go and is particularly useful for outdoor projects.

  • GLOBAL GEOSCIENCE WATCH now offers a Meteorology portal. Adopters will now be able to bundle Geoscience Watch to gain access to a new Meteorology portal. This comprehensive online resource leverages expert perspectives of meteorological research, current coverage of weather events, and comprehensive news and research articles to offer a unique active learning opportunity for students.

  • INSTRUCTORS COMPANION SITE. Rich with features and easy to use, this tool lets you quickly build media-enhanced lecture presentations using Microsoft® PowerPoint®. You can integrate dynamic models of meteorological processes into your lectures to engage your students-and help them cement their understanding. The DVD includes ready-to-use lecture outlines and templates; all art and figures from the text, which can also be printed and used as transparencies; animations of the text's Active Figures (available to students on CourseMate); videos on various hot topics; JoinIn student response slides; zoom and stepped art; and the Instructor's Manual and Test Bank in electronic format.
