Recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship at Boise State, and a renowned expert and lecturer, Dr. Hoeger continues to be active in the areas of exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. Sharon A. Hoeger is Vice President of Fitness and Wellness, Inc. in Boise, Idaho, and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. Co-author of five Cengage texts, Mrs. Hoeger researches current scientific information for revisions and develops accompanying interactive software applications -- innovations that set the standard for fitness and wellness software today. The Hoeger husband-and-wife team has been working, innovating, and training together for four decades.

  • All nine chapters have been revised and updated according to recent advances published in the scientific literature and information reported at professional health, fitness, wellness, and sports medicine conferences. New information and coverage has been added as well, for example: mindfulness and willpower, and their role in goal achievement; new fitness trends; emotional eating and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS); “technostress”; and the cognitive processes behind a variety of distracted driving scenarios (for a detailed list see the book’s Preface).
  • A unique Chapter 9, "Relevant Questions and Answers About Fitness and Wellness," uses a question-and-answer format to address timely issues and common misconceptions related to physical fitness and wellness.
  • Behavior modification is a hallmark of the Hoegers’ fitness and wellness series--and an integral theme of FITNESS AND WELLNESS. It is introduced early, then related to other topics throughout the text with Behavior Modification Planning boxes that give practical tips on how to effectively transition from current habits to the desired health behaviors.
  • "Frequently Asked Questions" address common issues, beliefs, and concerns most often expressed by students and connect the answers to the chapter concepts.
  • "Assess Your Behavior" sections at the end of each chapter assess students’ current behavior as it relates to chapter topics and highlight areas they need to change to improve their fitness and wellness.
  • FITNESS AND WELLNESS is a concise option for instructors who want a core text without extensive labs or assessments. In addition to a full ancillary package, the text includes short chapter activities designed to help students complete assessments that focus on achieving personal health and wellness goals.
  • "Assess Your Knowledge" multiple-choice review questions at the end of each chapter focus on core concepts and allow students to evaluate what they have learned. Answers are provided at the end of the book.
  • Inspiring "Real Life Stories" in each chapter use first person narratives to describe how students have made positive health changes in their own lives, including the challenges they faced and the strategies they used to overcome them.
