  • "What Does . . . Tell Us?" and "Important Features of a . . ." provide brief, just-in-time summaries of key concepts to help you more effectively grasp and understand the material.

  • New examples clarify concepts while demonstrating the real-world relevance of statistics.

  • The book's exposition has been tightened and simplified wherever possible.

  • Up-to-date technology-related examples include instruction appropriate for the latest versions of MINITAB®, SPSS®, and Excel®. Denoted by icons in the text, "Tech Notes" provide best practices and accompanying screenshots to assist students who are using these programs. "Using Technology" sections at the end of each chapter present problems with real-world data from a variety of disciplines.

  • Critical Thinking boxes at the end of most sections help students hone their critical thinking skills by providing additional clarification on specific statistical concepts as a safeguard against incorrect evaluation of information.

  • Interpretation boxes in several chapters help students refine their critical thinking and analysis skills by providing them with practice in explaining their statistical results in the context of a particular application.

  • Guided exercises immediately follow selected examples and provide an opportunity for students to explore new concepts. Step-by-step solutions accompanying each exercise allow for immediate self-evaluation and reinforcement.

  • "Expand Your Knowledge" problems present the geometric mean and the harmonic mean, moving averages, correlation of averages, odds for and odds against, uniform probability distribution, plus four methods for confidence intervals, probability of two confidence intervals, and serial correlation.

  • Special margin notes draw attention to more information about a related topic that appears in the "Expand Your Knowledge" exercises at the end of the section, allowing you to cover additional material as desired and enabling students to learn more about topics they find especially interesting or difficult to grasp.
