Gary Ferraro is an applied anthropologist who conducted research for extended periods of time in Kenya and Swaziland. He has served as a consultant/cross-cultural trainer for large organizations (USAID, the Peace Corps, the World Bank) and large international corporations such as IBM and G.E. Plastics. He currently works with businesses to help them cope with cultural differences at home and abroad.

Susan Andreatta is a past president of the Society for Applied Anthropology. Her theoretical background lies in political economy and political ecology as applied to the environment and health. As an applied anthropologist, Andreatta conducts field research in the areas of tourism, migration, resettlement, health and nutrition, sustainable farming and fishing, and the marketing of fresh local produce and seafood.

  • New Critical Thinking Questions now appear at the end of each chapter, reinforcing students' understanding by inviting them to reflect on the material they just read.
  • The new edition further strengthens the two themes of economics and the environment as well as community and social responsibility that run throughout the text, while retaining the themes of globalization and culture change.
  • Streamlined in length by ten percent, this edition also features an improved art program with an increased number of photos, maps, charts, and graphs.
  • The Eleventh Edition fully integrates the application of anthropology in the real world and speaks more directly to students, with a greater number of contemporary examples concerning non-academic career opportunities and the application of anthropological concepts in the workplace.
  • New "Applied Perspectives" topics include language preservation using digital technology and software apps (Ch. 6); a new village for abused women in Umoja, Kenya (Ch. 11); and an applied anthropologist's role as an expert witness in two court cases involving Native Americans (Ch. 13).
  • The book's popular boxed features highlight new examples of anthropology as it plays out in the world around us. For instance, new "Cross Cultural Miscues" discuss how a Peace Corp volunteer misunderstood the culturally appropriate way to give one’s condolences in the time of familial death in her village. This cultural misstep nearly cost her friendship with her next-door neighbor (Ch. 9), and the appropriate use of Facebook in the office (Ch. 6).
  • Each chapter opens with a list of key objectives (tied to chapter summaries) and a "SWAP" ("Share with a Parent" or friend) case study to engage students' interest and illustrate the importance of understanding culture. SWAP icons throughout the text also highlight popular features that apply anthropology concepts to diverse real-world scenarios, many of them career related.
  • Co-author Susan Andreatta's extensive expertise in environmental and medical anthropology provides a perfect complement to Gary Ferraro's decades of experience in the anthropology of business, education, and organizational structures, greatly enriching the text.
  • The authors use a clear and engaging writing style and speak directly to students, beginning with an opening letter to students highlighting why anthropology matters and its applicability to their daily personal and professional lives.
  • A cumulative glossary provides a useful counterpart to the running glossary in each chapter, while locator maps, distribution maps, and photos enhance the text's visual appeal and effectiveness for today's students. In keeping with the principle that well-chosen photographs can be highly instructive, every effort has been made to relate the photos and captions to the text as explicitly as possible.
  • Selected for its strong relevance and interest to today's students, material throughout the text addresses topics such as water access as a critical issue, climate change, education and health aid to women in developing countries, the increasing role of Facebook in business communications, and more career opportunities for applied anthropologists in Development Anthropology and Environment Anthropology.
  • The important themes of globalization, culture change, economics and environment, community and social responsibility are explored throughout the text in the coverage of communication and technology, globalization of world economies, kinship and the modern world, resistance to industrial agriculture, and the impact of climate change on settlements, people, and cultural lifestyles.
  • In addition to a chapter on the history, methods (including the use of technology in fieldwork), and areas of applied anthropology, the text includes popular applied features -- "Cross Cultural Miscues" that present real-world scenarios about people's interactions and misunderstandings, "Applied Perspectives" that cover topics such as anthropology in the courtroom, and "Contemporary Issues" such as the relationship among water, culture, and power.
