  • Enabling students to immediately connect with text concepts, Chapter 1: "Physical Fitness and Wellness" includes a new focus on the ways daily physical activity and exercise work together to increase lifetime wellness.

  • Chapter 4: "Body Composition" has been reorganized to help students better understand how body weight and shape affect lifetime health outcomes.

  • Chapter 5: "Weight Management" has been revamped with new material to help students understand how thoughts and feelings affect weight maintenance.

  • "Personal Profile" features open every chapter, asking students a series of questions regarding the status of their own fitness/wellness. This inventory draws students into the text by immediately showing them how their actions are related to their current level of health and outlining practical steps for behavior change. Students can build upon the profile as they read the chapter and keep the results for later review.

  • Over 50 activities promote active learning and assess students' fitness and wellness levels--helping students make a personal connection as they apply chapter concepts directly to their own lives. Critical-thinking questions at the end of many activities encourage students to apply what they have learned to their personal fitness and wellness goals.

  • "Behavior Modification Planning" boxes include bulleted information and research on popular topics that highlight ways students can make lasting changes to improve their fitness and wellness behavior. Topics include recognition of fad diet plans, nutrition and cancer prevention, cholesterol management and anger management. Accompanying "Try It" critical-thinking activities encourage students to put the recommended strategies and their new knowledge into action.

  • Enabling students to learn from their peers, inspiring "Real-Life Stories" in each chapter use first-person narratives to describe how other students have made positive health changes in their own lives, detailing the challenges they faced and the strategies they used to overcome them.

  • "Assess Your Knowledge" multiple-choice review questions at the end of each chapter focus on core concepts so students can test their understanding of key material. Answers are provided at the end of the book.

  • Making concepts more relevant, "Assess Your Behavior" sections at the end of each chapter help students evaluate their current behavior as it relates to chapter topics and highlight areas they need to change to improve their fitness and wellness.

  • "Frequently Asked Questions" address the most common issues, beliefs and concerns expressed by students and connect the answers to the chapter concepts.
