  • Learning tools help to improve retention and mastery of concepts, theories and issues. Numbered learning objectives are matched to end-of-chapter summary sections and linked to corresponding quiz items in the accompanying MindTap and test bank. A running glossary defines key terms when they first appear in the text. Each chapter ends with a chapter review summary, study questions, writing and discussion exercises, key terms and ethical dilemmas describing real-life scenarios that a criminal justice professional might face in the field.

  • "Ethical Dilemma" boxes in each chapter present scenarios that help students apply the principles being discussed. The accompanying analysis of the legal, policy and ethical aspects of each dilemma teaches students to consider multiple facets of any given situation.

  • "Ethical Issue" boxes present a current issue or policy in policing, courts or corrections followed by an extended analysis under law, policy and ethics. These boxes show how issues can be analyzed in a similar way to personal dilemmas.

  • "Quote and Query" boxes stimulate critical thinking by revisiting quotes from historical and contemporary figures in criminal justice and asking readers to answer relevant questions.

  • "In the News" boxes focus on real-life examples of misconduct and the effects of misconduct.
