  • Dennis Coon

Dennis Coon is a publishing phenomenon and one of the best-selling authors in the field of psychology. His innovative instructional methods and student-focused style make his works perennial favorites among instructors and students alike. To date, more than two million students have learned psychology with a Coon text as their guide. Coon graduated with a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Riverside, and earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Arizona.

  • John O. Mitterer

John O. Mitterer holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from McMaster University. He has taught psychology at Brock University to more than 25,000 psychology students. Mitterer was the recipient of the 2003 Brock University Distinguished Teaching Award, a 2003 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award, a 2004 3M Teaching Fellowship, the 2005 Canadian Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology, and the 2010 Brock University Don Ursino Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Large Classes. He also held a three-year Brock Chancellor's Chair for Teaching Excellence.

  • Tanya S. Martini

Tanya Martini obtained her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Toronto and is a professor in the psychology department at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. She has been awarded the Brock University Distinguished Teaching Award and the Chancellor's Chair for Teaching Excellence. In addition to introductory psychology, she has also taught research methods and two courses designed to facilitate students' understanding of career-related skills. Dr. Martini's research explores skill-based learning outcomes in post-secondary education, and her most recent work has investigated students' views concerning skill-based learning across their degree program. She has a particular interest in students' ability to articulate the competencies that underlie skills such as critical thinking and collaboration, and their ability to recognize how university assignments foster transferable skills that are of interest to employers. Her research in this area was recognized by an appointment to the advisory board of the Future Skills Centre in partnership with the Conference Board of Canada.

  • New Coauthor: Dr. Tanya Martini--an award-winning teacher and accomplished researcher--joins the author team. Her research focus on skills-based learning informs many of the updates in the new edition.

  • Skills Orientation: New chapter-ending sections offer students ways to improve the set of skills identified in the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major (Version 2.0). Various other sections throughout the text offer students opportunities to improve important skills such as information literacy, ethics, self-regulation and effective communication.

  • Close Alignment with APA Guidelines: While previous editions have been informed by the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major, the new edition features explicit keying of the text and the test bank to the APA Curriculum Guidelines for content and skills.

  • Simpler Format to Further Promote Comprehension and Interest: As textbooks become more elaborate and digital versions grow more complex, demands on students' comprehension abilities have increased. In response, this edition presents a simpler, more linear format, with content from all special feature boxes--on topics such as critical thinking and human diversity--absorbed into the primary narrative.

  • Known for its rich, student-friendly pedagogy, this book was the first college text to incorporate an SQ4R active-learning format, proven to be effective nationwide. Students focus on each topic through a concrete, six-step process that guides them from survey to question, read, recite, reflect and review.

  • Both the textbook and the test bank are explicitly keyed to the American Psychology Association's Curriculum Guidelines.

  • Gateway Questions organize the chapter's topics and guide the discussion. The Chapter in Review lists key points for each question/section and reinforces key concepts. Clear numbering at main headings helps connect these parts of the chapters as well as link book and digital content.

  • The book presents material on neuroscience. The chapter on "Brain and Behavior" covers the main topics for Introductory Psychology. Discussions in most of the other chapters promote critical thinking by encouraging reflection on the role of the brain in understanding psychological phenomena. Topics include "Your Brain's 'Fat Point'" and "The Schizophrenic Brain."

  • The fifteenth edition emphasizes several themes, including reflective processing and critical thinking as well as human diversity. For example, many topics and examples encourage students to think about and appreciate social, physical and cultural differences--and to accept them as a natural part of being human.

  • Knowledge Builder exercises test recall of preceding topics and expand students' understanding of new ideas by asking them to pause, reflect and to think critically; for instance, encouraging them to associate new concepts with personal experience and prior knowledge. Answers to all questions provide immediate feedback.

  • Bridges are brief in-text cross-references that connect a topic mentioned in one chapter to further discussion in another chapter. This feature helps students grasp the interconnection of ideas that characterizes contemporary Psychology.

  • A complete chapter on gender and sexuality distinguishes the text from many other comprehensive Introductory Psychology texts.
