Think statistics is just for statisticians? Think again! BASIC ALLIED HEALTH STATISTICS AND ANALYSIS, 5th Edition shows how Health Information Management (HIM) professionals wield the power of data to improve patient care delivery every day. To build a foundation for your success, this practical work-text demystifies stats by first demonstrating how to use calculations and then by offering practice in clinical case studies and practice problems. You’ll think through the big issues in health care today, consider available data, choose the best statistical analysis, and then make recommendations--just like the pros. And once you have the basic math and stats down, nothing will hold you back! You can master applications such as vital statistics and mortality rates, census and occupancy rates, and more, all while meeting CAHIIM curriculum and competency standards.

  • Homework Challenges. Chapter tests offer answers to even-numbered problems, leaving other problems to challenge readers as at-home assignments.

  • New Self-Assessments. Revised self-test questions in every chapter give readers practice with current issues in health care and new data.

  • Fresh Testing. Refreshed chapter test questions offer new opportunities for students to test their mastery of statistical approaches and the ways they can help hospitals and health-care settings improve patient care.

  • Coding Updates. International Classification of Diseases (ICD) procedural and diagnostic codes throughout the chapters reflect the 2015 conversion from ICD-9 to ICD-10 standards in electronic health care transactions.

  • Sensible Approach: Chapters start with basic concepts then move readers, step-by-step, through analytical applications to build confidence with data and information management.

  • Introductory Content: To ease readers into what may be foreign subject matter, Chapter 1 discusses common uses of statistics in health care, setting the stage for better understanding and application later.

  • Math Primer: Practice problems and a basic math review in Chapter 2 help learners gauge their level of math proficiency and identify gaps in skills needed for success in health information careers.

  • Supporting Stats: Chapters on rates, variability, reliability and validity explain concepts HIM professionals use to evaluate and select the right statistical tools for the problem at hand.

  • Research Fundamentals: A “Fundamentals of Research” chapter explores current research methodologies used in health care and demonstrates how they influence health information roles.

  • Selected Answer Sets: Self-tests, chapter tests, unit tests, and a mock final exam include only selected answer sets, providing ample practice and opportunities for those irreplaceable “eureka!” moments.
