He has published more than 90 journal papers and given more than 200 presentations. Dr. Peterson earned his Ph.D. in mathematics education from The Ohio State University.

  • Robert D. Smith

Robert D. Smith was Associate Professor Emeritus of Industrial Technology at Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, Connecticut. In addition to his teaching experience, Mr. Smith worked in the manufacturing industry as a tool designer, quality control engineer, and chief manufacturing engineer. He has also been active in teaching applied mathematics, physics, and industrial materials and processes on the secondary school level and in apprenticeship programs.

  • NEW INSTRUCTION FOR SPREADSHEETS EMPHASIZES USE ON TABLETS AND DIGITAL DEVICES. This edition provides focused spreadsheet coverage as more machine and manufacturing workers today use laptops and tablets, including the iPad®, Microsoft® Surface® and Samsung Galaxy®, on the job for convenience and portability. While tablets are bulkier than calculators, they offer the advantage of both spreadsheet and calculator apps on only one machine. Readers can also use this edition's new spreadsheet instruction on a calculator.

  • NEW UNIT NOW EMPHASIZES INTRODUCTORY G- AND M-CODES FOR CNC PROGRAMMING. This unit introduces students to today's widely used G-codes that prepare the machine to engage in a particular mode for machining. Students also learn about the M-codes used to turn on and off miscellaneous CNC functions.

  • SELECTED NEW CALCULATOR INSTRUCTION NOW PREPARES READERS TO WORK WITH THE MACHINIST CALC™ PRO 2, MODEL 4088. Students learn how to use this particular calculator for material and tool settings combined with DOC (depth of cut) and WOC (width of cut) to solve speed and feed calculations for face, end, or slot milling plus turning, drilling and boring. Coverage explains the calculator's step-saving drill and thread chart look-ups, right triangle solutions and bolt-circle patterns. Students also review the calculator's limitations, particularly when working with fractions.

  • UNNEEDED CALCULATOR INSTRUCTIONS ARE REMOVED FOR A MORE STREAMLINED PRESENTATION. Because most students are familiar with calculators and have used them since elementary school, this edition no longer includes basic instruction in calculator usage. In addition, since most new scientific calculators use a “natural display,'' the authors have eliminated much of the duplicate instructions for calculator keystrokes for a clear, focused approach.

  • NEW SUPPLEMENT OFFERS DETAILED GUIDANCE IN USING MACHINIST CALC™ PRO 2, MODEL 4088. This supplement directs students in using the Machinist Calc™ Pro 2 in all places within the text where calculators are used. Additional instruction within this new supplement shows how to use the calculator for topics beyond those covered in this book.

  • EXPANSIVE INSTRUCTOR'S WEBSITE PROVIDES EFFICIENT TOOLS FOR YOUR COURSE. You'll find answers and solutions to all problems in this edition as well as other extensive tools for course preparation and effective class presentations.

  • DIVERSE COVERAGE OF DIGITAL AND ANALOG TOOLS PREPARES READERS FOR SUCCESS IN TODAY'S MACHINING AND MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENTS. This edition introduces emerging electronic and digital tools while retaining instructions and equipping students to use analog tools. Thorough coverage ensures your students are well prepared with extensive real-world practice.

  • THOROUGH COVERAGE EMPHASIZES GENERAL MATH AND MORE ADVANCED TOPICS. Students review and gain a solid foundation in general math before advancing to more complex topics, such as compound angles and numerical control.

  • DETAILED PRESENTATION ADDRESSES POLAR COORDINATES AND HEXADECIMAL AND BCD (BINARY CODED DECIMAL) NUMERATION SYSTEMS. Students also learn material conversion between metric and customary systems of measure.

  • AN INTRODUCTION TO G- AND M-CODES FOR CNC PROGRAMMING PREPARES STUDENTS FOR ON-THE-JOB SUCCESS. Students learn the details of working effectively with the most widely used numerical control programming language.

  • COVERAGE OF SCIENTIFIC CALCULATORS REMAINS TIMELY AND UP TO DATE. The authors continuously update the book's comprehensive scientific calculator examples whenever necessary with each edition. They completely modernize the sequencing and provide contemporary, thorough instructions on how to best use the latest scientific calculator tools.

  • STEP-BY-STEP, PRACTICAL PROBLEMS AND EXAMPLES REINFORCE THE BOOK'S READER-FRIENDLY APPROACH. The authors carefully progress from the simple to relatively complex topics to ensure reader understanding. This organized approach to learning is well recognized for its effectiveness in guiding students.

  • EXTENSIVE USE OF REALISTIC TRADE-RELATED ILLUSTRATIONS BRINGS CONCEPTS TO LIFE. Students learn through example as they see concepts applied and in action within today's manufacturing and machine trade.

  • COVERAGE PROVIDES A UNIQUE, UP-CLOSE AND REALISTIC OVERVIEW OF WHAT'S REQUIRED IN THE MACHINE TRADES AND MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. Students gain the skills and practice needed for success as the authors emphasize the analytical approach that is necessary for translating engineering drawing dimensions into machine-working dimensions.
