• Susan Kenny

  Susan Kenny is Emeritus Professor in International and Community Development in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. She has extensive experience of community development in Australia and internationally. Since the 1970s, as an academic, practitioner, activist and researcher, Susan has observed the continuities and discontinuities in community development theory and practice and the challenges arising from changing social and political landscapes. She has a wide range of journal publications and has co-written and co-edited a number of books on community development in different settings, including The Routledge Handbook of Community Development; Challenging the Third Sector: Global prospects for active citizenship; Rhetorics of Welfare: Uncertainty, Choice and Voluntary Associations; Populism, Democracy and Community Development; Challenging Capacity Building; and Post-Disaster Reconstruction: Lessons from Aceh. Susan has many years’ experience in constructing and teaching community development courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In this sixth edition of Developing Communities, she has been working with Tammy Hand, bringing together her insights from research, practice and teaching to provide an accessible, comprehensive and highly relevant analysis of the contexts, issues and everyday practices of community development, focusing on Australia.

• Phil Connors

  Phil Connors is Associate Professor of Humanitarian Studies at Deakin University and Director of the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership. He holds a PhD in Community Economic Development and has more than 30 years of experience in practice, teaching and researching community participatory development across many contexts. Phil has conducted field-based research in many countries across Asia and the Pacific, including in Indigenous communities throughout Australia as well as Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
