  • Vickie Williamson

Vickie M. Williamson is an Instructional Associate Professor at Texas A&M University. She received her B.S. from Central Oklahoma University and Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. She has taught at the high school, community college, and university levels, as well as published several peer-reviewed chemical education research papers dealing with classroom techniques to increase students’ understanding of chemistry. She was named as the 2015 recipient of the ACS Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching and Learning of Chemistry for her body of research on the visualization of the particulate nature of matter. She has authored a laboratory inquiry-based manual for general chemistry, a similar laboratory manual for liberal arts chemistry, interactive CDs for high-school chemistry, textbooks and supplements for middle school to college level chemistry, and standardized chemistry examinations. She has been dedicated to teaching an atoms-first general chemistry since 2012.

  • Larry Peck

    M. Larry Peck, Professor Emeritus at Texas A & M University, received his Ph.D. from Montana State University in 1971. He won the Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award in 2000, Texas A & M's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002, and the Division of Chemical Education's Outstanding Service to the Division Award in 2007. Until his retirement in 2006, Dr. Peck taught science at all levels and directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs.

  • Kathleen McCann

  • All labs are updated and revised based on input from usersat both large and small institutions.

  • A new lab on intermolecular forces is included.

  • An updated Instructor’s Manual includes a recommended prelab discussion, sample answers to the prelab exercises and post-lab questions, and a list of needed chemicals and equipment for each experiment.

  • Highly structured Skill Building experiments efficiently teach skills that may be needed in future experiments and demonstrate previously developed concepts.

  • Guided Inquiry experiments guide students to form generalizations and hypotheses to explain their data.

  • Open Inquiry experiments have students design experiments to answer questions based on their understanding of concepts.

  • A section on laboratory safety and a student safety agreement help ensure a safe laboratory.

  • Prelab exercises that ensure students are prepared for the lab session maximize bench time.

  • Post-lab questions lead from data analysis to concept development and reinforce the core concepts of the lab.

  • The manual’s perforated pages allow easy removal of prelab exercises and post-lab questions.

  • A Common Procedures and Concepts appendix ensures students have the basic information needed to be successful in the lab.
